bigWOWO's Predictions for UFC 112

Alas, I’m most likely going to miss the UFC tomorrow.  Two title fights in one night, and I’m not going to be there.  Oi.  So let me do the next best thing and wager a guess on how things will turn out.

1. Anderson Silva will KO Demian Maia in the first round. I think Maia is a great jujitsu expert, but I have doubts about his stand up game.  As far as I know, he has never fought any serious strikers, with the exception of Nate Marquardt, who knocked him out in the very first round.  I’m glad Maia is getting the opportunity to fight for the championship.  I just don’t see him winning it.

2. BJ Penn will beat Frankie Edgar. I’m not sure which round he will win–it may even go the distance–but I think Penn will win.  The reason I’m unsure is that Edgar is untested against strong competition.  He beat Franca and Sherk both by decision, but this was after both had had their big losses, and it was also after both had cleared the steroids out of their bodies.  Edgar will also be fighting against Penn, who prefers to strike rather than wrestle.  I think he’ll get knocked out.  As one commenter mentioned, Penn used to be hit or miss when it came to training, but those days are over.  Penn is going to win.

3. I think Matt Hughes at 36 years old may beat Renzo Gracie at 43, but I’m cheering for Renzo. Renzo was by far the best fighter ever to come out of the Gracie clan, and I like his fighting style and his fighting spirit.  He’s a straight talker, a courageous warrior, and a true philosopher of fighting.  Matt Hughes, on the other hand, is an arrogant and cocky jock whose unlikeability is second only to that of Chael Sonnen (I’d love to dog Hughes right now, but unlike Sonnen, at least Hughes is able to end a fight with a knockout or submission).

Anyway, these are my predictions.  I think it’s my first time trying to predict a sports card.  Let’s see how I do.
