Fill in Our Future

Just got an e-mail from Courtney at Fill in Our Future.  As you all know, the deadline for the census count is April 1st.  Probably all of you have already received your form.   If you haven’t done so already, fill it out and send it in.  I was at a presentation last week where a census rep went through everything that this form represents.  Not only does it determine how much federal funding we get in our respective communities, but it also determines how much representation, i.e. House representatives, we get in the federal government as well.  It really does mean that you will be counted.

I just filled out and sent mine in yesterday.  We’ve got four people in our family, and it took maybe ten minutes at the most.  It’s very short–just 10 questions.  It’s all confidential; even law enforcement is not allowed to use the information you put down.  It becomes public record in 72 years, but I assume that most of us won’t be here by that time.  And even if I am around in 72 years, I would hope that I would be too busy having fun to worry that people know my birth date and family status back in 2010.  Hey, if anything, that’s a plus.  Asian American Studies scholars in 2082 could go back and say, yes, an Asian man and his Asian family lived in this house 72 years ago!  I would live forever in the public record.

Please spread the word about Fill in Our Future.  It’s a great resource for those who need help filling it out.  E-mail everyone you know today; the deadline is in two days!  Be counted!

    Hey All,

FIOF just contacted me again. They are still working hard to get the numbers. You can get a free netbook if you win their contest.

In order to encourage more 2010 Census participation, Fill In Our Future is holding a contest to win a Netbook for any participants who can answer the question of the month:

“Starting May 1st through early summer, census takers will be going to households that did not mail back a form to complete the census form. What do you plan on doing to help educate the community, your family, and friends that this process is continuing and they need to talk to the census taker so they can complete their form?”
