Eli Broad on Education

When you’re a billionaire philanthropist, people listen to what you have to say. bigWOWO is no exception. :)

Check out the video above for Eli Broad’s opinions on the American education.  Click here and see the first four videos for his views on charity and education.  See the video below to hear what Broad is doing with his Superintendents Academy.  He’s using his academy to teach superintendents to use executive skills in managing money and people.

I agree with what he’s doing. Our school year is too short, and I think he’s right in saying that we’re falling behind. I especially like how he has studied the school systems overseas to learn about what they’re doing.  We need metrics to make sure our school system comes together.

To clarify my past statements, I think higher education and trade school education are overrated and oversold.  Elementary and secondary school education, however, are incredibly important.  It’s during their early years that people build the foundations for their future endeavors.  The purpose of elementary and secondary education should be to build a foundation, while college should be a time to explore one’s passions with that foundation.  Everyone should get a good elementary and secondary school education.  College should be a time to further explore that foundation–provided you have a passion for learning.  Trade school can be good, but one should sign up only if one has experience and LOVE for your industry.

Edit 5.29.2011: I’m changing somewhat on my ideas on STEM education vs. humanities. See here (check out the links in the post too).
