Conversation at the bar where they were showing the UFC 109 match between Chael Sonnen and Nate Marquardt:
jaehwan: Go Marquardt! Get up! What are you doing?
old guy: Why are you cheering for Marquardt? Sonnen is from West Linn.
jaehwan: Sonnen is a Republican who was talking smack against Democrats when he was in UFC.
old guy: What? In that case, f#$k Chael Sonnen! Go Marquardt! Beat his a$$!
Much to my annoyance, Chael “No Class” Sonnen won last night. And he did it with his usual strategy–he laid on top of his opponent, throwing an occasional half-powered punch in order to win the decision. As with most of his fights, he almost got me to tap out since the boringness was so hard to take. Because of this “win,” Sonnen will most likely face the winner of Belfort-Silva for a title shot. He’s been talking smack about Anderson Silva for god-knows-how-long, so now he’ll finally get his chance.
I love trash talkers. That’s the major reason I’m such a Rampage fan. But Sonnen’s trash talk is so low class and unfunny that it becomes laborious to hear. First, there was the uncalled-for aforementioned political talk. He said something stupid like, “I’m a Republican, so when I enter the ring, I know how to get it done.”
Second, he accuses Anderson Silva of being “boring.” See the link here (the audio is available elsewhere). I mean, come on. This is coming from a guy who has never scored a single submission or knockout in either his UFC or WEC career. That’s right, he’s going to have a shot at the title without ever winning by anything other than a decision. The only exciting Sonnen fights are those where he gets beaten. If that’s not the definition of boring, then I don’t know what is.
Third, in the same story, he criticizes Anderson Silva for not speaking English. I guess the Republican connection is clear. “You immigrants need to go home! You’re taking our jobs! (and our UFC titles).” It’s low class, but even worse, it’s unfunny and boring. It’s also crazy given that it’s coming from a guy who never knocks out or submits his opponent, and that it’s being said about a guy who is famous for his knockouts. Chael, I came to see the guy fight. I don’t care that he comes from another country. If he’s a “world champion,” his field should be open to all people in the world, not just English-only Republicans.
This commenter has it right. Sonnen has no class. It doesn’t matter that he lives in my area. He’s an embarrassment to the sport, and even worse, he bores people to death.

Saints won the SuperBowl! I know it’s redundant, but being a lifelong resident of Louisiana I gotta yell it on the mountain! Okay, on various blogs.
I guess hell must have finally froze over!
