There was a massive 7.0 earthquake in Haiti today, knocking out power, phone lines, and entire buildings. It is estimated that 100,000 people died. See the story from the NY Times here.
“Parliament has collapsed,” Mr. Préval told The Miami Herald. “The tax office has collapsed. Schools have collapsed. Hospitals have collapsed. There are a lot of schools that have a lot of dead people in them.”
He added: “All of the hospitals are packed with people. It is a catastrophe.”
Obama made a statement:
““This is a time when we are reminded of the common humanity that we all share,” Mr. Obama said, speaking in the morning in the White House diplomatic reception room with Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. at his side.”
If you have a few spare dollars right now, I urge you to consider giving to the Red Cross. I have never in my entire life met a Haitian person, but I’m sure my money can be put to good use and help them to recover from the devastation that this earthquake has created. You can text ‘Haiti’ to 90999 to make a $10 donation, or you can go to their website here and click the “Donate Now” button.

Let me point out that chinese rescue teams were some of the first boots on the ground in Haiti (have you seen this in the US news? – sarcasm intended), while the top US leadership was doing collective naval gazing. The US sends an air craft carrier, without rescue supplies. The marines land and builds a base, but don’t have medicines to treat victims.
Our leadership and gov’t is so f*cked up. 9/11, Katrina, Iraq, now this.
