One of the issues in converting from blogger to novelist is getting out of oneself.  Blogging is all about writing from the blogger’s perspective, while novel writing (I think) deals a lot with understanding and becoming your characters.  When blogging, it’s all about you.  When writing creatively, it’s all about everyone but you.  Maybe that’s why there are so few blogger-novelists.

With my novel writing, I’ve been trying to get out of myself. How does one do that?  I don’t know how others do it, but I’ve been trying to expose myself to different viewpoints whether by reading, observing, or watching. For me, it’s about stepping back away from myself, from activism, from blogging, from everything that I’m used to doing.

Alexander Wang in the NY Times

Alexander Wang on right

Alexander Wang on right

I’ll admit that I don’t know anything about fashion. A high school friend once told me I had to be more fashionable. I tried, but it was so hard that I just gave up.  I realized that my fashion sense was so bad that I should be content just to match.

Nevertheless, I realize that fashion is important–not just for people who want to look good, but for society in general. Fashion is just another way of expressing oneself through visual means.   When people look good, they feel good, and they inspire others.  Which is why it’s good to see Asian Americans like Alexander Wang making their mark.

Big Businesses and the Environment

I saw this Op-Ed in the NY Times a few days ago: Will Big Business Save the Earth.  It was written by Jared Diamond, the guy who wrote “Guns, Germs, and Steel.”  Check out the article.  His thesis is this:

The embrace of environmental concerns by chief executives has accelerated recently for several reasons. Lower consumption of environmental resources saves money in the short run. Maintaining sustainable resource levels and not polluting saves money in the long run. And a clean image — one attained by, say, avoiding oil spills and other environmental disasters — reduces criticism from employees, consumers and government.

Tiger Woods and His White Women

I’m sorry, I had to break my 1-post-every-two-days plan because of the video above and the article below.   The video above is that funny, and the article below is something that I’m sure people have been thinking about.

This article by Jesse Washington is about Tiger and how his choices of lovers affect his position with black people.  Tiger allegedly has seven lovers so far, and so far all of them are White.  The article says that some black people are jumping off the Tiger bandwagon because of this fact.

Costco

picture-11(Click the video above to see the video.  I wanted to embed it, but the embedded video autoplays upon loading.)

I am one of Costco’s biggest fans.  Sure, you pay $50 a year to be a member, but man, what a store!  The quality is top-notch.  You get the best food from all over, and most of the everyday prices are hard to beat.  Jim Sinegal definitely created a good business model.  He pays his people very well–Costco people make more money than people in similar positions atWalmart, Starbucks, and other places–AND the store treats customers well.

Active Web Activism: Militant and Alpha-Asian

Hey All,

My fundraising has been dormant since Sam Yoon’s campaign, so I told my web posse that I’d post stuff up about their endeavors.

1. Project X: Militant’s work focused on the arts.  You can contribute money to help him out.  He’s going to give money to support Asian American artists in film.  In his own words:

Money, Marriage, and the Arrangements People Make

p_00009082

A bunch of us were discussing the new terms of Tiger and Elin’s prenup here.  mT raises some questions about money and marriage.  If a woman demands money for her hand in marriage, directly or indirectly, or, in Elin’s case, if she demands money in order to stay in a marriage, directly or indirectly, does that somehow compromise her values as a person?  mT raises a good point about the morality of such an arrangement.

I have a few opinions here.
