Alexander Wang in the NY Times

I’ll admit that I don’t know anything about fashion. A high school friend once told me I had to be more fashionable. I tried, but it was so hard that I just gave up.  I realized that my fashion sense was so bad that I should be content just to match.

Nevertheless, I realize that fashion is important–not just for people who want to look good, but for society in general. Fashion is just another way of expressing oneself through visual means.   When people look good, they feel good, and they inspire others.  Which is why it’s good to see Asian Americans like Alexander Wang making their mark.

One parting shot: To the people who criticized the Miss Asian Oregon contest for focusing on outward appearance and said that we should have a makeup-less contest, I strongly strongly disagree that outward appearance is unimportant.  We need Asian Americans to be outward with their physical appearance.  We’ve been invisible for so long, that it’s time we become visible.  It ain’t no sin to look good.  Dress well for the occasion.

Fashion is about high art. Style is about looking good. Alexander Wang, my friend, is an artist.
