Happy upcoming New Year!

It’s been a busy week.  I have a whole bunch of tests and continuing ed that I have to complete in the next week and a half.  Just took a two hour licensing exam today that I passed with flying colors.  :)   Next week, however, is the more important test.  If I don’t get through that one, there’s gonna be a world of hurt.  I’ll be at my computer studying for that for most of the next few days.

The Asian Inferiority Complex

Du Juan

Beautiful model Du Juan

I remember calling an Asian American friend when I first landed in Japan right after college.

“How do the guys here get anything done?” I asked him, jokingly.  “The women here are eye-blindly beautiful.  I’d have trouble keeping an eye on my work.”

At the time, Amuro Namie was really big in Japan.  I was working for a White British woman at the school where I taught, and the British woman told me, “Have you heard of Amuro Namie?  She is absolutely gorgeous.  Among the most beautiful women in the entire world.”

Ariel Hsing, Table Tennis Champion

Ariel Hsing, Table Tennis Champion

There is a good article in the Times today about table tennis making strides in Silicon Valley where all the Chinese and Indians live.  The article has a cool video feature.  Ariel Hsing is fast.  She’s 14 years old and is currently the top-ranked player under 22 in the country.  Her parents pay $40k a year to nurture and support her talent.

The article of course mentions the fact that table tennis isn’t as popular as the big sports like football and baseball.  Only three colleges offer table tennis scholarships.  Two thoughts:

Korea’s War on Shortness

ha-seung-jin

(Pic from here–I found this site through Google, not because I knew the domain name…)

It was a slow day at work, so I wrote another post: Ambitious South Korean Parents See Tall as All.  I caught this at 8A.

Racist HP Webcam

The video above is pretty funny and creative: HP Webcams can’t see black people.  The cameras are supposed to recognize faces and follow them around, but apparently they don’t work if a person’s complexion is too dark.  Consumer Reports tested out the claim and found that it was true, but it found that it could work with a black person if more lighting sources were added.

(Normally I’d say something about the STUPID comments under the YouTube video, but I’m going to maintain the holiday cheer and just ignore ‘em.  Let’s be thankful those morons aren’t here.)

Lou Jing

picture-3

Edit 12/28/09:

Thanks to adf who first raised the issue of possible bias on the part of CNN.

I asked a Chinese friend to look over the Chinese sites to see what was being said about allegations of infidelity on the part of Lou Jing’s mother, something that was not mentioned AT ALL in the CNN report.  From what he gathered, it seems that:

1. Lou Jing’s mom told the public on an American Idol style show that Lou Jing was the result of infidelity while she was married to a Chinese guy.

"Orange Days": Review and Ideas

Orange Days

Orange Days

I’m going to post this with the fore-knowledge that no one is going to watch it. Like I said in my last J-Drama post, I don’t expect anyone here to watch J-dramas unless that person has a prior interest in Japanese culture and language.  Maybe that frees me a bit; I don’t have to worry about dropping spoilers. If you’re going to watch this drama, feel free to stop reading, watch, and then come back (One of the links was broken, so I had to watch about fifteen minutes of the last episode with Spanish subtitles.  You may need some knowledge of spoken Japanese and Japanese sign language to make that 15 minutes work.  :)   )  If you’re not going to watch this drama, feel free to read and comment–you won’t need to see it to understand the ideas.  For those catching up, I’ve been checking out Japanese dramas just to get a feeling of the narrative style of Japanese TV.  It’s supposed to help my writing.  It’s pretty cool to see media by and about Asian people.

Girly Girls, Princesses, and Asian American Women

mulan-32

(pic from here)

I read Emily Co’s piece on AbsolutelyFobulous about the Princess and the Frog, and the implications of ethnic princesses.  In her piece, she writes:

I know we have Mulan and everything, but somehow she doesn’t seem to fit that Disney princess mold. I’m pretty girly, so I’d love to see an Asian princess who traipses around in a poofy dress, preferably wearing a tiara. I just simply didn’t identify with Mulan and I wonder if little Asian girls feel the same way. I can’t really picture them clamoring to wear Mulan’s armor for Halloween when they can don Belle’s yellow froufrou ballgown.

Justice, Episode 12 (Final)

I’m putting this in a day early…here is the very last Justice Harvard lecture episode. This one is about Same Sex Marriage and the Good Life. It’s been a great three months. I will say that this has been the most educational video series I’ve seen, either through the internet or elsewhere. I don’t know how long they’ll keep these up, so check ‘em out. Way to go, Harvard! Sound off like a WOWO.

Raise your voice (and use your money) against the Philadelphia School District

Thanks to Minority Militant, Alpha-Asian, AngryAsianMan, Field, and, well, just about everyone else, for bringing some attention to the racial violence taking place at South Philadelphia High School. We’re not seeing it very much in the mainstream media, so I think it’s good that bloggers are “covering” it. (I put “covering” in parentheses since we’re just linking to a mainstream account.)
