Strikeforce Hits Primetime

Did anyone catch Strikeforce on CBS tonight?  After that horrible Elite XC card with Kimbo Slice last time, along with the unskilled IFL amateur matches, I was a bit mistrustful of public TV MMA.  However, I was delighted by what I saw tonight.  I’d known about Strikeforce for a while–Frank Shamrock and Cung Le had their historic fight under the Strikeforce name–and this Strikeforce card lived up to the reputation of the brand.

I know that a lot of the Strikeforce fighters are those who have lost in the UFC, but quite honestly, I think a lot of these guys could give the UFC boys a run for their money.  All of the fighters seemed skilled in all ranges of fighting, and the jiu-jitsu was exciting to watch.  Even though I like Dana, at the very least, it’s good that there is a competing league against the UFC.

As for Fedor Emilianenko–I appreciate that he has knocked out several former UFC champions.  I think he could kill Frank Mir, Randy Couture, and any of those other big guys.  I love the fact that a judo guy, as opposed to a jiu-jitsu guy, is considered the best in the world.  However, I think the emergence of Brock Lesnar as a credible heavyweight champion demands that Fedor step up and make that fight happen.  Fedor was losing to Arlovski during their last fight, and he was bleeding like a mofo during tonight’s fight.  I don’t think he’s the fighter he used to be, although I can’t argue with those last two knockouts.  Since Brock and Fedor are obviously both good, the UFC and Strikeforce really need to make this fight happen.  Otherwise, it’s idle bragging.

  1. Neutral Observer says:

Fedor’s being repped by russian mob punks. That in and of itself doesn’t make a problem –Don King is perhaps the biggest thug in pro-sports– but the problem is they want too big a piece of the action for a Fedor UFC fight.

Dana White wants it and is willing to pay Fedor, but Fedor needs to wise up and understand that this isn’t Russia. The Red mafia has no power in the U.S.
If Fedor has any brains he will go ahead and be reasonable, make the jump to UFC…and probably get crushed by Lesnar in the first 6 months.

  2. I can’t believe I missed it. I think Fedor can hold down the fort for Strikeforce against UFC. Competition is good. He might be able to bring over some UFC fighters and fans. Everyone loves this guy.
