The Secret of Asian American Scholastic Achievement

No, it’s not that we raise our kids military style.  Nor is it a genetic thing.

Nope, the NY Times just published an article that says that “nonsense sharpens the intellect.”  When you see something that doesn’t make sense, it enables you to see patterns in other fields that you ordinarily would not notice.  From the Times article:

When those patterns break down — as when a hiker stumbles across an easy chair sitting deep in the woods, as if dropped from the sky — the brain gropes for something, anything that makes sense. It may retreat to a familiar ritual, like checking equipment. But it may also turn its attention outward, the researchers argue, and notice, say, a pattern in animal tracks that was previously hidden. The urge to find a coherent pattern makes it more likely that the brain will find one.

Which is why Asian Americans do so well on tests. Hey, if more people were like Asian Americans and noticed stuff like this:

more people would be brilliant. If the pictures above don’t represent an “incoherent pattern,” then I don’t know what does.  Hell, for those of y’all in NY and California, you probably saw twenty of these before lunch.  No wonder they never put brilliant thinking tanks like Google and Pfizer in places like Portland!  No wonder y’all New Yorkers and Bay Area dudes are so smart!

You see, it really is nurture over nature.  I’m sure that after just looking at this post, y’all just raised your IQ by about ten points.  Y’all must be noticing all kinds of things that you never noticed before.  If you’re a scientist trying to find a cure for cancer or something, get back to work while the brain cells are kicking!  If you’re a novelist, start writing.  There truly is no time like the present.

My test-taking skills must not be quite up to par. Are you trying to suggest there is some sort of pattern with those pictures above?

    Hmmm, lemme see….

The only pattern I can detect is that of relatively homely (though undoubtably affluent) White guys with fairly attractive females wearing dresses.

But I might have my Colorblinders on. ;-)

That is probably the funniest thing you ever posted Byron.

May i ask who is the couple in the second picture?

  4. anna123 says:

Also does anyone else notice that all the ladies all kind of have the same kind of “look”?

Like long black hair (no fringes), similiar raised eyebrows, same style of dresses, even their facial structure looks the same. Its like thats the archetypical “look” for women who date asiaphiles lol

Oh no! Not another rant against interracial posting again!

I think Jeahwan means to inspire.

FWIW, this post reminded me of an ex-bf from Taiwan dumped me for a girl who spoke better Mandarin citing that he wanted his kids to be fluent in Mandarin and he did not think they would be able to learn if Mandarin was not natural for me. Eventually she cheated on him.

Anna123, I know what you are talking about. I once had a co-worker tell me Asian women were extreem. They were either reallllllllllyyyyyy hot or fugly (f-in ugly), never tweenies (average). Yeah, that guy is an a-hole, but there is something to be said.

I am still of the opinion that you can take any face and make it beautiful or ugly. It is all in the way you carry and present yourself. That is one of the reason I promote Miss Asian Oregon. We need to take ownership in our definition of what is beautiful. That is the reason my business partner supports Miss Asian Oregon. We were just talking about this the other day. People think he’s got a thing for Asian chicks, but he doesn’t. He’s never dated an Asian woman and from what I know, what he finds attractive is not the waif like caricature with artificially enhanced breasts and a slender nose. Well, what he likes is neither here nor there. As I have stated on other list serves, if the most articulate, well presented contestant happens to be 5’4″ and 150 lbs, she’d be the winner in my book. The more Asian her face looks, the better. In some ways, I want someone with my grandma’s nose to win.

I think we need to do more and take control of what is deemed beautiful in our culture and not let other decide for us.
