Sex, Lies, and Paternity

John Edwards

Good thing this guy didn’t win.

From CNN:

Former Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards talked a campaign aide into claiming he fathered a child born to Edwards’ onetime mistress, sources familiar with the issue said Monday.

Edwards admitted to his affair with Rielle Hunter in August 2008 after months of denials, but said he could not have been the father of Hunter’s daughter, who was born the previous February. Former Edwards staffer Andrew Young has said he was the girl’s father — but has recanted and says he made it because he believed in Edwards, lawyers and others familiar with the matter told CNN.

There’s a difference between loyalty and stupidity.  I believe this qualifies as the latter.  Think about the craziness of that statement–”I belive in Edwards, and therefore I will help him lie.”  I think it says just as much about the aide as it does Edwards.  This is similar to that local issue we had not too long ago.

Why didn’t Edwards or his aides see Rielle Hunter from 60 miles away? Looking at the woman, I smell trouble. I can’t believe that two men let one dumb stick ruin their lives.

She is most definitely an unusual choice for throwing away two political careers:

it actually is not that unusual, could he get models if he were single? yes but he is not, he can only get what was available and what he could get discreetly. That really narrows it down as its not like he can hangout with hot women for no reason but he could hang out with a person who was “working” for the campaign to do videos for it with out too much suspicion.

Remember who Bill Clinton got on. If he were just a congress person away from his home district not under the national spotlight he would have had more options but not as a presidential contender.

What is really pathetic about Edwards is not that he cheated but that when he was interviewed by ABC news last year at his home on national TV that millions of people watched he continued to lie and it was so obvious that he was lying.

Don’t lie once you have be caught. Of course it is his kid. Why the hell would he be sneaking around to visit it. Even with the national enquirer showing the picture on the frontpage he still lied and said it wasn’t his. It was almost worse than the Gary Condit interview in 200o.

I almost expect politicians to cheat on their spouses. Sad, I know, but I have low standards when it comes to politician behavior.

I think Edwards was putting himself first. He lied, and what made it worse was that he lied while running a campaign, AND he cheated while running a campaign. He lied because he wanted to get people to vote for him. That’s pretty bad.

Honestly, I’m kind of curious–whose conduct do you guys think is worse, Edwards or Young? Young was willing to lie about an affair, and in doing so, he subjected his own wife and children to public scrutiny which was based on a lie. He was willing to toss his family in front of the bus for John Edwards’s lie.

I actually find that a lot worse than anything Edwards did.
