Giving to Harvard

29moral_lavalette_johnharvardOkay, I am DYING to get started on our Justice course, but I said that it would start on Saturday, so let’s just wait until Saturday.  12 am, Saturday morning.  I suppose it’s only two and a half days away.  Oi.

I saw this great blog post on the NY Times website, which I think is a great lead-in to our Justice course: Should you give to Harvard?  In the blog post, Randy Cohen argues that one should not give money to Harvard and that money serves a greater social good when it goes towards community colleges, or historically black colleges, or schools that attend to the needs of a greater number of students.  He rails against Harvard as a bastion of elites and elitist thinking.

John Liu Wins Democratic Nomination for Comptroller

30elect_650

John Liu won the Democratic nomination for City Comptroller of New York City yesterday.  Because New York City is controlled by the Democrats, this basically assures him a victory in the November election.  Assuming he wins, he’ll be the first Asian American to hold elected city-wide office in New York City.  I’ve seen Liu speak before, and he’s the real deal.  He does his job well, and he’s outspoken on Asian American issues.

His new job is going to be a pretty serious responsibility:

American jailed for trying to reclaim kids

art_father_wtvf From CNN: American Jailed for Trying to Reclaim Children.  More here.  We don’t know all the details of this story, but wow, what a story.  The American courts had declared dual custody of the children, and the Japanese ex-wife took them up and fled to Japan, despite the fact that the American ex-husband feared that she would do just that.  Because Japan is not a party to the Hague Convention, Japan is under no obligation to abide by any foreign court rulings.  The American guy flew to Japan, re-kidnapped his kids as they were with their mother, and then tried to drive to them to the U.S. Consulate.  Unfortunately for him, the Japanese police were waiting for him after being alerted by his ex-wife.  To his surprise, the US Consulate then refused to open the gates as he tried to run. Of course, we’re only getting the American guy’s perspective in all this since the wife isn’t here to plead her case to the American media, but this is certainly sad.  Now he’s stuck in a Japanese prison cell, possibly stuck for five years.

Justice with Michael Sandel: Invitation from bigWOWO

I’ve written a post about “Talent,” an issue that has dogged me for two months.  Over the last two months, I’ve written two posts and recorded two podcasts about this real-life issue, and none of it got published because I’m still challenging my own beliefs.  I’m usually very good about arguing points and winning debates, but this last issue kind of killed some of my faith in humanity, and I’d like for you guys and gals to help me think it through.  My “talent” post will be up tomorrow. (I think it will be protected, so let me know if you need the password.)

Asian American Female Suicide

nprlogo_138x46

AAM posted a link to this interview with blogger Jen Wang from Disgrasian and Aileen Duldulao, who recently authored a paper on Asian American female suicide.  US-born Asian American women, according to the report, have higher rates of suicide and higher rates of contemplation of suicide compared with other groups.  In the interview, available in both text and audio, Jen talks about her dealings with depression and thoughts of suicide.  It’s a good interview.

An Old Article about Lyoto

Lyoto "the Dragon" Machida

Lyoto "the Dragon" Machida

Someone e-mailed me an old NY Times article today: Contender Shores Up Karate’s Reputation Among U.F.C. Fans.  It’s about Lyoto Machida, written right before he knocked Rashad on his rear.  The article is about how Lyoto’s style is changing people’s perception of karate.  I agree with most of the article, but I think that karate’s reputation was suffering even before the UFC.  Lyoto really turned things around.

What’s ironic is that he’s not the only karate specialist.  Chuck Liddell and current welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre, both mentioned in the article, are primarily karate stylists, as is Bas Rutten.  Pat Miletich got his striking from karate too.  Lyoto just happens to have the most karate-looking style.

Miss Asian Oregon

mao

Okay, time for an exciting announcement. I am the co-owner of the Miss Asian Oregon Pageant, and we will be having our inaugural event on October 10th, 2009 down in Salem. My partner Michelle is a former contestant/finalist and law firm owner, and we are totally psyched about doing this. Our emcee/organizer Liani is a prominent public official and lawyer activist. We now have all of our contestants, and we’re ready to rock the state of Oregon.

The New Art of Book Promotion

ph2009092304612

Most of the people on this site are either bloggers, writers, or both.  I thought you all might find this Washington Post article interesting: Novice Authors Must Promote Themselves, Since Publishers Won’t.  Here’s a paragraph and a half from the article:

She cobbled together a trailer for her book on her home computer, using iMovie software, downloading a free tune off the Web for background music, and stuck it on her Web site. Her agent helped get her on one network television morning show. About 20 friends hosted book parties, which she hit on a self-funded three-week blitz, selling books out of the trunk of her car. A guy shot video of her reading an essay at one of these parties, and she posted it on YouTube when the paperback came out.

Our Sam Yoon Campaign

I wanted to give us a little time to bask in our one year birthday before business as usual.  Thanks again, everyone, for making this place what it is.

So…back to business.  As I’m sure some of you already know, Sam Yoon lost last night. He had 21% of the vote compared to Michael Flaherty’s 24%, so Flaherty will be running against Menino in November.  Not only did he lose the mayoral race, but he also now becomes a lame duck councilor who will lose his seat in January.  You can see his concession speech above (or here if the embedded video doesn’t work).  As all of you know, bigWOWO readers contributed $250 for Sam, and we were working hard to get him a win.
