Kristof and WuDunn win award

Kristof and WuDunn

Kristof and WuDunn

Nicholas Kristof and his wife Sheryl WuDunn are the 2009 Dayton Literary Peace Prize winners.  The Dayton award, according to the website, is the first and only annual U.S. literary award recognizing the power of the written word to promote peace.  The award recognizes Kristof and WuDunn for their work in bringing awareness to issues around the world, particularly women’s issues.

I’m not familiar with WuDunn’s work.  I do think that Kristof deserves the award–despite being annoyingly flippant at times, and despite his tendency to portray himself as the good western rescuer, he has brought much needed attention to problems around the world.  He has dug deep in uncovering issues, and he has promoted environmentalism and other issues that are important.  Many of these issues would probably remain unknown without his work.

Asians, Ethics, and You

Never drive when drunk, and never post when tired.  I’m good about the first, and usually good about the second, but when the fatigue shows no sign of going away, I’m willing to step in and do what I have to do.

In this case, I saw this post by Jeff at 8 Asians.  In the post, he talks about a White Realtor telling his brother-in-law that the Asians are ruining everything in real estate by providing kickbacks to buyers.  Jeff then talks about how Asian people also do good things by buying houses in good areas and stabilizing the market.  I posted the following:

Wong Fu on CNN

This is pretty cool. Wong Fu was on CNN.  (Thanks, Alpha.)  I wrote about these guys earlier.  I’m glad that they’re getting good media coverage, and it looks like they’re still doing well on college campuses.  I could think of worse jobs than touring the country for a bunch of screaming fans.  :)

3 Steps to Novel Writing

typewriter_1_md(pic from here)

Continuing our Strategy and Motivation series, Alpha-Asian has written about Overcoming Writer’s Block.  As you all know, Alpha is a successful writer for bodybuilding magazines, as well as a successful self-publisher of fitness books.  As an author, he has achieved what most of us dream of achieving.  If you’ve got writer’s block, definitely check out his post–there’s lots of good info there.

Rampaging PUAs

Just saw this at the Anti-Social Ladder.  It’s a great post, and she also links this great article by Dan Savage.

I’d been meaning to blog about this story for a while.  It’s the story of George Sodini, a man who was getting very little sex, who responded by taking it out on the entire female gender by going to a fitness gym and murdering three women with a gun.  Sodini was a disturbing psychopath; you can see his blog at the ABC News site.  According to his blog, he hadn’t had sex since 1990.  George Sodini was also a Pick-Up Artist in training, but he failed in his efforts and took his frustration out on random women.

White Faces for Hire

"Hi, I'm JOHN."

(pic from here)

I found this link from The Minority Militant’s blog, which linked me to the original story.  In China, they sometimes hire White people to act as executives for sales meetings.  They do this in order to fake other companies into believing that they are more international than they really are.  As one White actor says, “In America, this is fraud, but in China, it’s marketing.”

Disturbing Talent

Check out the video above. Watch the whole thing.

I’ve had this CD for a while, ever since a friend gave it to me as a gift some seven or eight years back. Noriyuki Makihara’s tunes are catchy, and the instrumentals are quite unique.  He’s quite talented.  On a whim, I decided to search for him on youtube, and the video above came up. At first, I was thinking, man, that female actress is extremely photogenic. Then I was thinking, wow, that is highly disturbing. And then I was thinking, wow, that’s REALLY disturbing. I must’ve watched this video seven times.

Musts and Shoulds

As mentioned in yesterday’s podcast, we’re going to enter a discussion on strategy, motivation, and getting things done.  We’ll probably be posting stuff like this throughout August.  Alpha Asian, and maybe others, will be joining in next week (Edit: See AlphaAsian’s post here), and we’ll be strategizing and offering ways to help our readers achieve things.  These pieces of advice could be applied to activism, career, or anything that you’re trying to achieve.

There are a few reasons why I’m going this route.

BJ Penn and Anderson Silva Win

23ufc101(pic from here)

Wild night in Philly (though I watched from SE Portland).  Anderson Silva had an unbelievable defeat over Forrest Griffin.  He was so much faster than Griffin that there was no chance of him losing.  In the final few seconds, he put his hands down and just threw random punches, much the same way Naseem Hammed used to do it.  He knocked Griffin out with a really short punch.  It was, to say the least, surprising.
