Nike Hood to Coast 2009

Before the race

Hey All,

Sorry for being delinquent on updates.

My big athletic event, the one that I’ve been training for for the past few months, took place this weekend.  On Friday and Saturday, I ran the Nike Hood to Coast.  It’s a 197 mile relay, the longest relay in the whole world.  See the picture of our awesome Van 1 team above (courtesy of Kong and Phong).  See a picture of me in my nerd goggles running below (courtesy of Kong):

Yellow

Thanks to Leon who sent the video above.

It’s funny because I’ve actually had the term “yellow” thrown at me as a racial slur.  So I can’t really blame the White kid for thinking the answer was “Chinese.”  Poor Asian kids though.  This is how they mess with us.  It reminds me of that scene in Malcolm X where they take the dictionary and look up “black” and “white” and find all kinds of loaded meanings.

Life Without Fear

This is an old concept, even older than FDR who told us that we had nothing to fear but fear itself.  In my last post, I talked about two men who run a billion dollar corporation, one of whom asked, “What would your life be like if you could eliminate the fear of failure, and where would you be at this point in life?”  Fear and doubt go hand in hand.  I’ve met so many people who don’t want to do anything because they fear failure, and I’ve met so many others who define their world by what they and others can’t do.  Can’t and fear are both four letter words.

Most Red Ink Ever

I’m not an economist, but my gut instinct tells me that this isn’t going to work in the long term…

In a chilling forecast, the White House is predicting a 10-year federal deficit of $9 trillion — more than the sum of all previous deficits since America’s founding. And it says by the next decade’s end the national debt will equal three-quarters of the entire U.S. economy.

"Black Folks Need Legacy"

I’m not sure why there is so much talk out there about African Americans and money. Maybe it’s because our economy is in the dumps right now. Maybe it’s because we ought to be focused on how we can pull ourselves out of the dumps. Anyway, here’s another article, this time about a couple of older African American brothers (literal not figurative) who run a $1 billion corporation with holdings in real estate, retail, and hotels.  The link says, “black.donald.trumps.”  I shudder in pity.

Here is a good quote:

Starting a business when young

Ephren Taylor, in the CNN video above, talks about starting a business. He started his first business at 12, became a millionaire at 17, and is now the youngest African American CEO of a publicly traded company. He’s written a book called, “Creating Success from the Inside Out.”

I like what he says about starting a business.  He says that college is the best time to do it, when you have no kids, no mortgage, tons of friends around you, and lots of expert professors.  He says that when you’re young, everyone wants to help you.  Man, he should’ve told me this fifteen years ago (when I was eighteen, and he was 11…oh wait, that was before he started his first business!)!

Families and their money

The NY Times had a great Motherlode blog post here: When a Mother Ruins a Son’s Credit Score.  It’s about a mother who persuaded her son to open a credit card while he was in college.  She told him it was a joint account, but it was actually his application with her as an authorized user, and she charged it up and stuck him with the debt.  Read both the post and the comments–they’re very interesting.  Some of the commenters have stories about parents opening utility bills in their kids’ names.  It’s incredible what some parents will do to their kids.

Effective, not Popular II

In my previous post, I mentioned the advice of being effective, not popular. In the post, I attached a picture of the sumo wrestler Asashoryu.

Check out the video above. Asashoryu is a very good example of effective-not-popular. Sumo is a traditional Japanese sport, one which is as much sport as tradition to the Japanese. When Asashoryu became the 68th Yokozuna (Grand Champion), he was the first Mongolian ever to attain the rank and the third non-Japanese yokuzuna after Akebono and Musashimaru, who are both Samoan. Currently, he is the only active yokozuna, along with Hakuho, who is also Mongolian. There have been no Japanese Yokozuna since Takanohana retired in 2003.
