California Apologizes to Chinese Americans

(Thanks to D in HK for sending this!)

On July 17th, 2009, the California legislature approved a bill that apologized for racist laws against Chinese Americans during the mid nineteenth century.  According to the article:

The laws, some of which were not repealed until the 1940s, barred Chinese from owning land or property, marrying whites, working in the public sector and testifying against whites in court. The new bill also recognizes the contributions Chinese immigrants have made to the state, particularly their work on the Transcontinental Railroad.

Edit 7/22/09: New pic of actual arrest from CNN:

Gates in cuffs

Word got out a few hours ago that Henry Louis Gates was arrested last Thursday for disorderly conduct.  Apparently someone suspected Gates of breaking and entering into what turned out to be his own home, and they called the cops.  Gates was already inside the house when Officer James Crowley got there, and when Crowley asked him to step outside, Gates questioned the cop.  There were a few verbal exchanges, the Crowley ended up arresting Gates for disorderly conduct.

Dodging the Question

I saw the video above on SEFTRE.  It’s the same old arguments that Pat has been spewing forth since forever–White people are discriminated against, White people get jobs because they’re most qualified, White people built this whole country, and anti-White institutional racism is a pressing issue.

I liked how Rachel Maddow put him on the spot and saying he was “dating” himself.  His views truly are a relic of the past.  The funny thing is that he never answers any of her questions.  She asks him if he thinks it’s a good thing that we may be getting a Latina on the court, and he dodges the question by bringing up a totally irrelevant point about some other guy who wanted to be on the court.

[As I mentioned in a previous post, life is busy with the activist summer.  Thank you to bigWOWO reader Dizzle, who sent the following post.  I agree with him on the stereotypes.  I remember having a conversation with a Taiwanese woman who kept insisting that Apolo Ohno was a great athlete only because he was half white and had the "white genes."  I kept asking, "Well, what about the #2 short track skater, who is full Korean and who managed to still win gold in some events?"

Thymos Book Project 2009

header

As promised, this post will be about the Thymos Book Project, which is Thymos’s 2009 activism “event.”

Last year, we had the Frank Chin Event, and the year before that, we had the Vincent Chin Event, which we co-sponsored with Asian Pacific Americans for Progress.  This year is especially interesting to me because it’s the first time we’re asking people to do something rather than watch or listen to something.  This year’s efforts truly bring the Asian American active to Asian American activism.

The End of History and the Last Asian Man

Who's in the foreground, and what's the story?

A Canadian-Chinese Work of Orientalist White-Worshipping Glory

Orientalists–you people are everywhere.  Here I am, getting set in writing my piece for the Thymos Book Project, and you Orientalist Mofo’s have to lob another one in my direction.  I guess the upside is that you’re providing a good lead-in to my introduction of the Thymos Book Project–which will come as soon as I’m done with my first draft.  I’m sorry, but I’m not going to let your issues interfere with my work.

Where Teachers Make More than Baseball Players

picture-1Saw this on my Yahoo page.  Top online course instructors in education-obsessed South Korea are making upwards of $4 million a year.  According to the report, these educators are like rock stars who have money and status. Because of the scalability of internet classes, some of these instructors make more than professional baseball players.  In the days before the web, there would be no way to get 50,000 paying subscribers for a single teacher.  The web has enabled these teachers to reach more people than ever before.

Raising a Karate Kid

I blogged a few months ago about martial arts and kids.  Remember this?  And this?

A few days ago, I decided that I was going to give it a shot by teaching my son how to throw a punch.  I taught the Gun-Gun to curl his hand in a fist.  It didn’t look right, so we worked on it until it sort of resembled a fist.  Then I instructed him to punch a pillow.  I showed him how.

Activist Summer Months are Starting

I wanted to give you all the heads up that the summer of activist partying is about to start for me.  For those who followed my stuff on the 44s, you may be remember that a few months before this time last year, I was busy getting on my knees and begging for funds to support the Frank Chin Event, which turned out to be one of the greatest Asian American events in Portland’s history.  My knees were sore from begging so much.  The blog posts didn’t exactly stop, but they slowed down to a crawl.

Thanks to SEFTRE, who found this.  The Boston Phoenix ran an article on Friday about how Yoon and Menino are competing over the Boston Asian vote, and they accompanied the article with the photo on the right, a graphic of Menino in a Chinese takeout box labeled “Yoon for Mayor.”
