Teaching a Man or Woman to Fish

In an earlier post, I posed the question to the ladies about whether or not they would ever entertain dating a guy who aspired to be a house husband.  I asked if it would be acceptable for a guy to say, “I want to have kids, and I want to stay home and raise them.” I got three kinds of answers from the ladies: no, no, and no.

The Beer Fest

Gates, corrupt cop, and Obama

Gates, corrupt cop, and Obama

(Thanks, Mo.  Pic from here.)

The corrupt cop, Henry Louis Gates, Obama, and Joe Biden met for beer today at the White House.  No one has apologized, and they’ve all agreed to move on, which should please racists all the world over.  I know I’m in the minority on this opinion among the Portlanders I know, but Obama dropped the ball on this one.  He’s turned a “teachable moment” into a non-issue.  It’s kind of like when people say that a point is “moot” (debatable) as a means of not debating it.  He swept an egregious act of police abuse under the rug.

Heat Wave

Squirrel trying to cool off

Squirrel trying to cool off

It is ridiculously hot out there.  It looks like we’re going to be hitting 107 degrees Fahrenheit (41.7 degrees Centigrade) today for our hottest temperature in Portland history, and it looks like we’re also going to be entering the longest stretch of >100 degree weather in history.  It’s crazy.  I don’t feel like working, getting out, or doing anything.  It’s all veging out for me until this heat wave passes.

Some of the stuff I'm working on

As I mentioned in my last post about the Thymos book project, I finished my submission.  Actually, I finished my first submission.  I enjoyed writing it so much that I’m now working on a second submission.  My second submission is an essay about why Asian American literature is different from mainstream lit, how it is similar to mainstream lit, and how I hope Asian Americans can join the dialogue when it comes to human issues, even though our situation is very unique.  I’ve already rewritten the first page at least three times, so blog posts will continue to be more sporadic than usual.

911 Caller off the Hook

Since everyone was wondering about racial profiling by the woman who called the police, it looks like the caller is off the hook.  According to the audio that the Cambridge PD released today, Lucia Whalen, the caller, didn’t even know Gates and the driver were black, PLUS she raised the question of whether or not they lived there, citing the fact that they had suitcases (click text for links):

“They were two larger men — one looked kind of Hispanic but I’m not really sure, and the other one entered and I didn’t see what he looked like at all,” she said. “I just saw it from a distance.”

Brucelee.com

picture-5

Thanks to Leon, who sent this: Brucelee.com.  I’m glad Shannon is continuing to share her father’s legacy.  The man was absolutely brilliant.  I had forgotten that he died at 32.  It’s amazing how much he accomplished at such a young age; I’ve already outlived him!  Check out this really cool article about Bruce on ufc.com.  Dana White calls Bruce Lee the “Father of Mixed Martial Arts,” and Frank Shamrock, who hates Dana White, also called Bruce the “Father of Mixed Martial Arts.”  Everyone, regardless of their politics or beliefs, holds the man in high esteem.

Global Warming and Indigenous Cultures

25tribexlarge2Everyone read and check out the slide show on this article.  It’s really sad how global warming is destroying these indigenous cultures.  As I alluded to here, when a culture dies and its people become assimilated, so much is lost.  I just hope that people realize how our actions are affecting the world.

My thought for the day: Live responsibly, and let’s do what we can to curb our carbon emissions.

Obama: Arrest an innocent black man and get invited to the White House

picture-11

This is why I think Obama will be a good president, not a great president. In this case we have a cop with a temper who was clearly in the wrong, who abused his authority by arresting a harmless old African American man outside of his own home, and now Obama is inviting that same dirty cop to the White House.  Why not just invite Marc Fuhrman from the OJ trial?  What about the guys who raped Abner Louima?  Even if Gates overreacted, Crowley is clearly in the wrong.  He’s a cop and should know how to behave.  Not only does his police report reek of inaccuracies and inconsistencies, but he arrested an old man who posed no danger to him whatsoever.  It’s an abuse of authority, and the president has invited this thug to the White House.  Unbelievable.

If Only…

Jon and the new Kate

Jon and the new Kate

Thanks to American Girl who sent word about Jon Gosselin and his new Kate.  That’s right, our favorite Rice Daddy is not with Hailey Glassman but with a brand new girlfriend whose name is Kate.  If you thought it was only yesterday he was dating Glassman, you’re not that far off–it happened so fast that not even Glassman knew.  His new Kate chica is a tabloid reporter who used to work for Star Magazine.  When she interviewed him, she fell for him and decided to quit her job.

Gates vs. Dirty Cop Part II

Great interview with Skip Gates above. That guy is eloquent, and there’s an Asian connection–he was filming Yo-Yo Ma’s ancestral cemetery. Also, did Soledad O’Brien say that she had Gates as a professor during college?  Man, this keeps on going further and further up the chain!  I found it hilarious how CNN did the video panning across the crowd during Gates’s talk–it almost reminded me of that patriotic scene from “Independence Day.” Haha. It’s totally going to make this filthy cop look bad, but filthy cops deserve to look bad. As Obama says in this article:
