Women Hold Up Half the Sky

women_can_hold_up_half_the_sky_surely_the_face_of_nature_can_be_transformed

(Pic from here)

Was reading some of the comments from the last podcast, and I just wanted to share a few thoughts.  These are just my thoughts.  Feel free to disagree.

1. Asian men and women and women share a common link.  Socially, both rise and fall within the hierarchy together.  One may be ahead of the other at any given point, but each hinders or buoys the other.  When Hong Kingston diminishes me, she diminishes Asian women.  People see her elevating White men on a pedestal, and it makes her look bad.  Similarly, if I were to launch a war against Asian women, I’d end up destroying Asian men.   I can’t launch a war against my own daughter or sister and expect it to empower me.  (And yes, I have both.)  Especially my daughter–my job is to protect her and do whatever I can to exert an influence that encourages her creativity and freedom.

Raising my Asian kids Jewish

I saw this story on the Omamas blog: A talk with Wendy Mogel, author of ‘Blessing of a Skinned Knee.’

The author is giving a talk at the Mittleman Jewish Community Center this Thursday (tomorrow) the 7th.  I hadn’t heard of her prior to reading the post, and I don’t know if I’m going to make it out to the Hillsdale area tomorrow, but based on her advice in the interview, I may very well check out her book.  As a parent, I believe that parents who overparent are worse than parents who underparent.  I think parents who don’t allow their kids to make decisions, who micromanage their kids, and who create an environment of fear, are much worse than parents who simply don’t show up.  I like her quote: “The kids who do best in college are the kids who have life skills and not this fancy academic sophistication.”

Update on Bullied Asian Kid

Thanks to Annie from Boston, who posted this.  It looks like the Asian kid (who is from Korea) will be reinstated, and the suspension will be removed from his record.  The Asian boy still faces criminal charges, but the families of the two boys have made amends, and the White boy has apologized for the racial slur.  The White boy’s family has also called the police and asked for the charges to be dropped.

I think this is a great example of strong activism.  The kids at the school walked out on Monday, and by doing so, they brought attention from the media and pressure on the school for a huge injustice.  Even though they’re kids, they are the ones who are acting like adults.

Podcast: URB4N talks about Interracial Relationships

After our first attempt at discussing IR via podcast, we finally brought back URB4N!  In this podcast, URB4N, a 29 year old Asian American alpha male investment banker from NYC who posts on 8Asians, Yellowworld, and the 44s, discusses the interracial dating disparity among Asian Americans, and he shares his thoughts about how it affects society, where the trend is heading, and what Asian men need to do.  Download it here, or listen to it here:

In case anyone was wondering.

That guy makes it look so easy.

It’s amazing what you can learn over the web these days.  See here and here–in addition to boarding, you can learn to play guitar and deliver a baby.

Dateline on Emery Kauanui

emery

For those who missed it, there was an excellent feature on Dateline last night about the death of surfer Emery Kauanui.  If you remember, I blogged about this late last year, and Tokyolovestory from the 44s blogged about her high school friend Hank, one of the boys who was tried as an accessory.

Check out the feature if you have time.  It’s a really sad story, totally senseless.  This was one of those cases where the defense had, well, no defense.  It’s hard to argue for a 220 lb. guy who drove to his 145 lb. victim’s house, killed his victim, and then claimed self-defense, despite the facts that it was a 5 on 1 fight and he outweighed the victim by 75 lbs.  The drama between the prosecutor and the defense attorney was interesting as well.

"The Battle of East and West"

“The Battle of East and West?” Man, the gimmicks people use to sell tickets! I don’t blame them–with the UFC eating into boxing ticket sales, they have to do something to save this sinking ship. But still–”Battle of East and West?”

As for the fight itself, it won’t be pretty. Barring some kind of miracle, Pacquiao is going to open Hatton up like a can of tomato sauce. It won’t even be close to fair. Pacquiao, as they mention in the video, is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world today, and I guess he has to fight someone. But this fight isn’t going to be nice or even exciting. Unless you think of it as a “Battle of East and West.”

Evangelicals most likely to support torture

artendtorturegiEvangelicals are the most likely to support torture.  People who don’t go to church are less likely to support torture, and the least likely group to support torture are mainstream Protestants–religious people without the evangelical Bible Thumping persuasion.

Is anyone surprised by this at all?  Growing up at an evangelical Bible Thumping church, I know how it is.  You have preachers at these churches teaching young kids that the world is sinful, that God will end up destroying the world by fire, that they are “soldiers” of Jesus Christ, and that they will be persecuted for their beliefs (despite the fact that an overwhelming majority of leaders and politicians in this country are Christian).  Is it any wonder that these people learn to disregard the humanity of people who look or think differently from them?
