Medium to Enter TV Heaven

Alas, the greatest TV show ever written will end next Monday.  I learned this last night when I saw the preview for next week’s finale.  According to one source, CBS may pick it up after NBC dumps it, but for the near future, it looks like the final curtain is closing.

I love the show.  It’s rare to find a show which:

a) keeps its audience in suspense

b) encourages its audience to think creatively

c) employs amazing dialogue, sharp writing,  and suspenseful film angles

d) elicits real feelings for all its characters

Seriously, this show has everything going for it.  The dream scenes are surreal, the writing is intense, the acting is excellent, and the characters are just beautiful.  The character development is especially strong; I’ve found myself empathizing with Allison, Joe, Devalos, and Scanlon.  It’s hard to write a script that allows that empathy, especially when there are crimes to be solved and perpetrators to be caught.

That being said, I do think that it may be a good time for the show to call it quits.  Ariel is entering a rebellious stage, and it’s going to ruin the dynamics of the family interaction.  Joe can only go so long with his current work situation–it’s pretty much a given that in real life, an engineer with his idea would move to a place with more engineers and more venture capital.  Allison is now confident in her abilities; the doubt and uncertainty is no longer there, and therefore some of the suspense is gone.  Devalos has reached a level of equilibrium in his working relationship with Allison, and Scanlon is about to undergo a major personality change with his upcoming fatherhood.

As I said before, it’s good to retire at the top.  Medium, we’ll all miss you.  Thank you for being the best show on TV.
