Daddies Who Become HouseDaddies

The latest blog post at RiceDaddies from Daddy in a Strange Land talks about Secret Identities and the promotional events in LA.  Check it out here.  As I mentioned a couple days ago, I have a podcast coming up with Jimmy Aquino, who is one of the writers for Secret Identities.  We recorded last night, and I expect to post that cast on Monday.

In his blog entry, Daddy in a Strange Land also linked a blog post that linked back to RD, a new blog called Double X (for the chromosomes).  This blog post is fascinating.  In the post, Hanna Rosin argues that we need fewer daddy posts, rather than more.  She then quotes an equally fascinating Atlantic article by Caitlin Flanagan:

Why it's important to watch movies and TV

I watch communitychannel (Natalie Tran) on YouTube from time to time. ALL of her stuff is funny (“It’s porno music slash comments time”), but this one was f$%ing hilarious. I remember one message board battle I had last year where someone called me Gollum. I had no idea who Gollum was, and I still have no idea.  Someone also once referenced the cherry chapstick song, and I didn’t get it until a month later.  Educate your children with pop culture, or they too won’t get the cultural references.

Gingrich calls Sotomayor "racist"

artnewtSee CNN story here.

When are these Repubs going to realize how pointless their accusations are?  107 of 111 Supreme Court justices have been White men.  43 of 44 U.S. Presidents have been White men.  The vast majority of Fortune 500 CEOs are White men.  Before Pelosi, ALL of the Speakers of the House, Mr. Gingrich, were White men.  To make it seem like the playing field is equal when the playing field is clearly unequal would strike any rational person as being incorrect.

Her experience is different from yours, Mr. Gingrich.  If they had more people like her in positions of power, you would probably realize this.

Medium to Enter TV Heaven

Alas, the greatest TV show ever written will end next Monday.  I learned this last night when I saw the preview for next week’s finale.  According to one source, CBS may pick it up after NBC dumps it, but for the near future, it looks like the final curtain is closing.

I love the show.  It’s rare to find a show which:

a) keeps its audience in suspense

b) encourages its audience to think creatively

c) employs amazing dialogue, sharp writing,  and suspenseful film angles

d) elicits real feelings for all its characters

Podcast: Interracial Relationships and the Gender Divide, Asian American Female Perspective

C-Bruhs (BicoastalBitchin), Eva (Blake and Micah podcast), and Sylvie (Antisocial Ladder) recorded an all-female podcast yesterday.  It’s the third in an ongoing series about Asian American Interracial Relationships and the Gender Divide that we started last year on the first part and continued a few weeks ago with URB4N on the second part.  This third one runs for just over an hour.  Download it here (55 megabytes fat–not phat–since, once again, I ran into GarageBand problems), or listen to it here:

PostSecret for Asian Americans

shush_by_mztrippie

Caught news of a new site called PostMimi at Slant Eye for the Round Eye. It’s a PostSecret-style blog, where the author Karen encourages Asian Americans to e-mail or mail their secrets to her.

I like the idea.  But many Asian Americans already routinely post their secrets under anonymous handles on sites like the 44s and 8 Asians.  I remember admin-ing the 44s and meeting some guy who admitted that he had been convicted of attempted rape, and that he didn’t care or have remorse.  It was baffling (and sickening).  So I wonder whether anyone will actually post anything original.

Lyoto Machida, Newest UFC Champion!

Lyoto Machida’s second round knockout of Rashad Evans was the best fight I’ve seen. Not only did he take out an accomplished fighter at the top of his game, he also took him out using some highly technical karate.  Well before the fight, I called it correctly by saying that “Rashad [wouldn't] know what hit him,” but even I was shocked by the quickness and excitement of what I saw.  When Rashad went down, the entire crowd in the sports bar erupted.  No one saw it coming.

Data: Then and Now

data

I was planning to take a break for the long weekend, but I saw this on Angry Asian Man.  Empire Magazine put together a Goonies reunion 20 years after the movie.  You can see their “Then and Now” feature here.  With the exception of Corey Feldman, it looks like they’ve all been successful.

Do people remember Data?  Ke Huy Quan played the guy with the gadgets, as well as Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.  Man, that guy was a good mix of funny and cool.  He played the brainy kid with such style that even the racist bullies on my grade school playground couldn’t make fun of him.  Apparently he now works mostly behind the camera as a fight choreographer.
