Wow.  This is huge news.  I’m…in shock.

I think the Republicans are going to have to work really hard on their message.  Obviously it’s not working, even for their most loyal and powerful leaders.  I think Specter’s decision to jump is going to have at least some kind of domino effect on the rest of the party.

Spector had to do this so that he could remain a senator. He was polling very badly in the republican primary so he switched. There are not that many moderates left in the republicans party so I can’t see a ton of switching like this happening.

A lot of hardcore conservatives already hated him and he barely won the primary in 2004. He had to have Bush come by his state (W was still popular especially among R’s then) and prop him up and just to get passed the finish line in a republican primary.

What is funny is that Pat Toomey his opponent then might get a rematch but instead of in a primary in a general election battle.

    Good points.

I think it’s a similar thing to Lieberman. He had enough Democrats against him to lose the primary, but he had enough supporters in the general election to win the seat as an Independent. Specter would lose quite a few votes since a lot of Repubs switched parties in order to vote for Obama.

I’m not from his state, but somehow, I don’t see him losing the general election. But who can tell these days? I never thought Elizabeth Dole could ever lose.
