Jaehwan's Last Lap at the 44s

This was my recent blog at the Fighting 44s.  I love the site, but I’ve realized that my time is up.  Over the next week or so, I’ll try to post some articles up there (and here too).

(Photo from here.)

Everyone who has ever been involved in collaborative or competitive work knows that neither sprints nor marathons last forever. There’s a time to begin, a time to excel, and a time to stop. After being a member here for five years and working as a blogger for perhaps the last year and a half at the 3rd Most Dangerous Job in the Asian American Blogosphere, my time has come. It’s time for me to meander to a different pasture. My blogging career at the Fighting 44s will be over at the end of this month.

Clarification on the "Dogs" and "Stunt People"

I’m not sure what’s more interesting: the fact that we’re still talking about this movie, or the fact that we’ve got tons of martial artists here and only one person so far has commented on Lyoto Machida’s title shot.

So here’s my view on the whole “Dogs of Chinatown” debate–I guess we’re talking about the debate now, rather than the movie itself.

Lyoto Machida Gets Title Shot!

lyoto-machida-kick(Pic from here.)

In Asian American (Asian Brazilian?) sports news, Lyoto Machida is FINALLY getting a title shot in the UFC.  Machida is an amazing fighter.  As Joe Rogan described him, he is the most elusive fighter in UFC history.  He somehow manages to get hit only a few times per fight, if he gets hit at all.  If you think about the level of competition in the UFC, it’s pretty amazing that he’s able to do this.  It’s pretty amazing that anyone can do this.

Happy Earth Day

Today is Earth Day.  Celebrate by turning off the TV and checking out the awesome outdoors.  Cut down on your car usage.  If you’re in Portland, we don’t have the sunny hot weather that we had yesterday, but it’s dry and cool–perfect Portland weather.

If you need inspiration, I found this MySpace page with good Earth Day imagery and quotes.

Actors' "Why" Post

One of the things I like most about having my own blog is that people understand I’ve got my own schedule.  I post when I can, even though I don’t always have time. Plus, I get to ask hard questions that may not be popular on other blogs or may cause people to fight.  I have total total freedom.

My next Amazon purchase (along with the aforementioned Secret Identities)

picture-6(See Jamie Ford’s with Borders interview here.)

I’d like to take a moment to embarrass some of my contributors.  A few months ago, Winnovative, MinorityMilitant, Larry, and Jason sent me an Amazon.com certificate out of the blue.  I was totally surprised and really touched.  I LOVE Amazon–it’s my favorite store on the web.  Thank you so much!  I used to make a decent living before having kids, but with tons of expenses both in the present and future, I rarely spend these days.  With the cost of diapers, food, and eventual college, I’m most likely going to spend the next 21 years in poverty.

"We Chinese People Need to Be Controlled"

Jackie Chan

Jackie Chan

According to KATU and the Associated Press:

BOAO, China (AP) — Action star Jackie Chan said Saturday he’s not sure if a free society is a good thing for China and that he’s starting to think “we Chinese need to be controlled.”

He then went on to talk about Hong Kong and Taiwan being too chaotic.

I have the utmost respect for Jackie Chan’s contributions to stunts and movies–he’s the greatest stuntman in the history of film.  However, I think he’s fallen on his head one too many times.  This is the same guy who encouraged China to spread its culture by marrying off women from Shanghai to foreigners.

CaucAsian PlayBoy/Better CaucAsian Kid

Alec Greven

Alec Greven

I saw this video while doing research on another book (which I’ll talk about soon).  Nine year old Alec Greven wrote a book called “How to Talk To Girls.”  It reminded me a lot of those Asian Pick Up Artist conversations we had.

This nine year old wrote a book on how to pick up girls.  It’s cute and all…but why do parents let their kids do stuff like this?

Secret Identities

I just wanted to give a plug for Secret Identities.  I’ll probably be checking this book out very soon.  See the ABC News Clip of Jeff Yang, Editor-in-Chief, above.
