Asian Stereotypes 101 for Filmmakers

Micah Moore asked me to present some information about movie stereotypes as they relate to Asian Americans.  He writes:

What would be really helpful to filmmakers is you giving specific examples of known films (from any territory) that you do respect. Films that got it right in your opinion. And why. It would be great if you could include both films with characters that are all identified as part of only one culture, and also examples with multi-cultural casts.

Asian Kid Defends Self and Gets Charged

Protesting

Protesting

(pic from here, double posted on RiceDaddies.)

I saw this on angryasianman.  Apparently this Asian kid was getting bullied all year.  The bully calls the Asian kid a f#$%ng Chinese,” and when a shoving match breaks out, he punches the Asian kid in the face.   The Asian kid happens to be a black belt in martial arts, and so he punches back.  Knowing his fighting ability, he punches with his non-dominant hand and aims for the jaw, but he winds up hitting and breaking the bully’s nose.  His punch sends the bully to the hospital.  Now the Asian kid is being charged with assault.

Upcoming Podcasts

itunes_podcast_icon_300

We’re going to have two, possibly three upcoming podcasts.  The first will be this coming weekend, and it will be between me and a surprise guest.  We will be discussing the large interracial dating/marriage disparity in the Asian American community and its effect on both Asian Americans and non-Asian Americans.  We will also discuss the future outlook and what can be done to fix any problems related to the issue.  My guest has a loud opinion, and he’s looking forward to sharing it.  I’m looking forward to hearing it.  I anticipate that this will be fun.  It’s an important issue, one which, despite all the typing on the internet, we do not discuss enough in real time.

Senator Arlen Specter Switches Parties

Senator Arlen Spector

Wow.  This is huge news.  I’m…in shock.

I think the Republicans are going to have to work really hard on their message.  Obviously it’s not working, even for their most loyal and powerful leaders.  I think Specter’s decision to jump is going to have at least some kind of domino effect on the rest of the party.

Um…okay…that makes sense

artrandgiAccording to CNN.com, the works of Ayn Rand are experiencing a resurgence in the wake of our financial crisis.  Rand was a proponent of free markets, a believer in individualism, and someone who extolled the virtues of selfishness. People have begun to start re-examining her ideas:

“If only ‘Atlas’ were required reading for every member of Congress and political appointee in the Obama administration. I’m confident that we’d get out of the current financial mess a lot faster,” Wall Street Journal columnist Stephen Moore wrote in early January.

Discussion from Obsessed

300_535612I saw the trailer for this movie on TV a couple of weeks ago, and so I blogged a bit about the race dynamics behind the production, the casting, and the movie itself.  Though the reviews for this movie were harsh, the movie ended up topping this weekend’s box office numbers.  I don’t know about the rest of you, but I want to see this movie.  Badly.

House Party With Konrad Ng, Obama's Brother-in-Law

Curtis Chin, producer of “Who Killed Vincent Chin,” sent me the following. I think it’s an awesome opportunity for:

1. Community with your friends and colleagues
2. Learning about what President Obama is doing for Asian Americans
3. Making our collective voices heard at the national level

If anyone wants to do this, let me know, or you can D.I.Y over here!

On May 31st, Asian Pacific Americans for Progress (apaforprogress.org) is hosting a nation-wide conference call with Konrad Ng, the Chinese American brother-in-law of President Obama. It will be a great chance to hear from someone so close to the President and to learn how the President might approach our community.

Global Warming and the Bible

(Thanks to P2H for this link.)

Rep. John Shimkus on global warming: “The earth will end only when God declares it’s time to be over; Man will not destroy this earth. This earth will not be destroyed by a flood.”

It scares me to think about what went on in the days before youtube when politicians didn’t have to worry about us seeing their forays into moronism.  This is a clear case of fundamentalist religion trumping logic, or fundamentalist religion creating stupidity.  Shimkus has an engineering degree from West Point, but people often turn off their brains when that opiate of the people comes into play.  To think that people criticized Clinton for smoking pot!  Seriously, which drug kills brain cells faster?  Bush may be gone, but the fundamentalist religious movement is still alive and kicking in the U.S. Congress.

The 44s announces its retirement

The Fighting 44s will move from active site to legendary myth. I’m retiring from the site, and the site is retiring from the blogosphere. We’ll party like it’s 1999 until the final bell tolls.  The 44s has achieved great things in its short time in the blogosphere, and we will truly miss it.

By the way, check out some of the old archives and stuff from the past.  Topics such as covert racism have been covered in relative depth–I say relative because you’ll get a deeper understanding by reading a book, but I know not everyone has the time or inclination to read.  Some of the old, super-militant stuff has been deleted because the general populace just isn’t ready for such knowledge or can’t handle the truth. :)   (Evil laughing sound.)  That old stuff will simply have to remain in our memories.  44s forever.

Traditional blocking

From my 44s sprint:

I don’t know who is still here, but if we’ve got any of those crazy martial arts practicing mo-fos around (you know who you are), I’d like to pose a question.

I just found out yesterday that Lyoto Machida, after literally waiting years, will finally get his well-deserved shot at the UFC Light Heavyweight Title. On May 23rd, he will fight and (I predict) destroy Rashad Evans.
