Sanjay Gupta Won't Be Surgeon General

Sanjay Gupta

Sanjay Gupta

Saw this on CNN.  It looks like Sanjay Gupta will not be in the running for Surgeon General.  He said that he wants to spend more time on his medical career and with his family.

I think he’d bring a lot of exposure to the post, and he could do a lot to promote public health.  Still, I can’t say that I blame him for doing choosing to do something else at his age.  He is really young, relatively speaking, and it probably makes more sense to spend more time on the ground to create his career.  Surgeon General is usually a final post, rather than a stepping stone to greater things.

Marines Fire Four over San Diego Crash

Remember this?

According to this CNN article:

The investigation criticized the pilot, who was being trained on the F/A-18, for not consulting a pocket checklist that outlined emergency procedures. While controllers aboard the aircraft carrier that launched the jet urged the pilot to land at a nearby Navy airfield at North Island, squadron officers relied on “incorrect assumptions and inaccurate data” to guide him back to the plane’s base at the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station.

The Best TV Show Ever

Patricia Arquette as "Allison Dubois" in Medium

I don’t watch that much TV.  I tune into Survivor occasionally, and I’m following the Amazing Race this season because of Victor and Tammy Jih.  If I miss either of these shows, it’s not a big deal to me.  I usually have better ways to spend my time anyway.

First Asian American Ivy League President

Dr. Jim Yong Kim, next President of Dartmouth

Dr. Jim Yong Kim will be the first president of an Ivy League school.  He will take his position in July.  This is great news; college presidents are visible, have the ability to make decisions about education, and help determine the  direction of the country.  I don’t know anything about Dr. Kim, but it’s yet another barrier that has now come down.

I was surprised that this took place at Dartmouth.  I usually don’t think of Dartmouth as being a diverse Ivy, although admittedly I’ve never been there.

What Asian America Could Use (Part I of III)

ph2009030102282

There’s a load of stuff that I’ve been meaning to write about, but life is getting busy.  So I’m writing a Part I of III just to make sure that I cover at least some of the issues that I want to put on this blog regarding Asian American culture.

So here’s Part I.

The Washington Post yesterday had an article on the Girl Scouts.  The article spoke about the declining membership rolls of the Girl Scouts, and how changes are taking place.  More Girl Scout activities are moving to the web, and the style of communication between leaders and girls is more peer-based with fewer badges for achievement.  The end of the article talks about immigrants and how the Girl Scouts has helped acculturation.

Dow Falls Below 7,000

dow

The Dow has crashed below yet another floor of support.  It’s at 6,884 as I’m writing this.  It has lost more than half its value since its high of 14,000 in October of 2007.

It’s time to nationalize the banks.  Let’s learn from Japan, and let’s not repeat the same mistakes they made.  Have the government take over the banks now.  We need to act swiftly.  With the government in charge, investors will have greater faith in the system.  The government will have more authority to curb the absolutely ridiculous levels of executive pay, and Americans can know that there will be oversight.
