Some Good News on the Community and Economic Front

15librarynjspanLibrary usage up. At least something good is coming from this horrible economy.  Will this create the educational revolution that we’ve all been hoping for since W brought his proud ignorance into the White House eight years ago?  Could it help usher in the era of Asian American Lit that we’ve been awaiting for the last 35 years?

It’s a start.

There’s some possible good news on the way too.  According to this NY Times blog, a bad economy can create an environment for inventiveness.  Will we see creativity go up?  Some entrepreneurs are already starting.

People Who See Dead People

dubois-book(Picture from Amazon)

I’ve been burning through books this week.  Two books and half the fiction section of a lit journal in three days so far, and I’m about to start another book.  After the next book or two, I think I’ll have the reading-urge out of my system so that I can seriously write again.

Bernie Madoff, creator of what is perhaps the largest Ponzi scheme in history, is finally going to prison after bilking wealthy investors of literally billions of dollars.  Today he pleaded guilty to all 11 charges of fraud, money laundering, perjury, and theft, and he will be sentenced on June 16th.  In the meantime, his bail has been revoked, and he will spend time behind bars.

Secret Lives of the Red States/What Asian America Needs Part II

“What does is say that states that tend to be more conservative and religious actually consume more porn?”

–Kiran Chetry from CNN

(Apologies in advance to those who may be offended.  I’m condemning the super-fundamentalist religious people, not the moderates.)

The consumption of online porn in the Christian, conservative Red States tends to be higher than the consumption of porn in the liberal, blue coastal regions.

Hyperthermia

If you are a parent, read this Washington Post article. Read the whole thing, and listen to the audio presentation above (hear it here if the feature above doesn’t load).  The article and audio presentation are about parents who accidentally leave their children in their carseats.  It’s really, really sad.

My own view is that these parents don’t deserve additional condemnation from the courts; they’re already beating themselves up over it enough.  As someone says in the article, it’s not as if hard punishment will prevent further occurrences on this phenomena.  I can understand how this can happen; I’ve been distracted myself at times during that drive to daycare.  It can happen to anyone.

Empathy and Kids

I just finished this book: Great Kids: Helping Your Baby and Child Develop the Ten Essential Qualities for a Healthy, Happy Life by Stanley I. Greenspan.  The book focuses on ten different areas on which to focus when raising a child who is confident, creative, strong, and moral.  Those of you in education have probably read tons of books like this one, but it’s a great little book.

My favorite part of the book was the part on giving your child the tools for moral integrity.  It says:

IR on the Decline

picture-2Saw this on the 44s.  Apparently IR is on the decline:

Katie Xiao emigrated from China when she was 4 and always thought of herself as Americanized — until she started dating.

Subtle cultural clashes with Caucasian or Latino boyfriends led to unhappy breakups. It made her realize she’s more Chinese than she thought. Now she wants to meet a man of Asian descent.

Forever Young

I saw this CNN video about Dora. As most parents of young children know, Dora is extremely popular, perhaps more popular than any kids show when I was growing up.  Because we live in an era of total merchandising, kids can own Dora dolls, watch Dora DVDs, wear Dora backpacks and Dora clothing, and even use Dora toothpaste.  It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that Dora is a huge enterprise.  In this era of big money, Nickelodeon, according to the above video, is trying to extend Dora’s appeal by making an older Dora for tweens.  They are doing this by creating a pre-pubescent Dora that the older crowd would find more appealing.

Guess What I've Been Up To

I spent yesterday and today at home with the baby. Mama WOWO went back to work, and so there was some lag time between her return and the arrival of family help. So I became the Stay-At-Home dad.

According to this segment of the conversation in the video above, the economy is creating lots of Stay-At-Home dads.  Banking, housing, and automobiles are industries which have a skewed gender ratio in favor of men, and because these industries have been hit the hardest, a large majority of the recently laid-off happen to be men–82% according to the Times segment.  Without these jobs, more and more men have left the job market and have now taken on roles as house-husbands.  It’s a complete reversal of the traditional gender roles, which is what the two bloggers in the video above are discussing.  Who would’ve ever thought that the economy could help fight sexism?
