Bicoastal Bitchin'

I blog and say what I have to say about Asian American culture; however, I post on a whole bunch of other stuff as well, including politics, literature, and other stuff.  There are just too many interesting stories out there.

Anyway, it makes me happy when I find other Asian American blogs and bloggers that also heavily emphasize the Asian American part of the web conversation.  My most recent discovery, thanks to Minority Militant and Larry, is Bicoastal Bitchin’.  This stuff is FUNNY.  There are three bloggers who post on a whole bunch of various stuff, including comics, the remnants of colonialism, and…ding ding…IR!  It’s definitely a new take on things.  I like the fact that they’re snarky and sometimes crude, and I really like the fact that they also organize events.  Community, as I’ve said many times, is in.

Hey, when are you bitches (or is the proper term bitchers?) coming out to Portland?  I’m just sayin’.  (And yes, that’s totally a joke.  Love the blog!)

  1. Thanks Jaehwan for the big ups! Us bitches at BcB appreciate the thanks and praise. About Portland (which I ADORE by the way), 1/3 of us (me) DID visit up north to go on the Goonies tour in Astoria and to buy a MacBook at Pioneer Place. Love the foodie joints (waffle sandwiches?!), hipster restaurants (Doug Fir what?) bike culture, dive bars, no taxes, but wasn’t too fond of the lack of diversity. Sorry! Blogged it here: http://bicoastalbitchin.wordpress.com/2009/02/25/portland-the-last-bastion-of-white-flight/

Thanks and we’ll be sure to put you on our blogroll on BcB! And next time I’m in Portland, YOU, ME, UNION JACK. Whatdayaa say?!

Hey ~ AzN at BcB sent me a link to your site and I must say, it’s nice to find someone representing Portland in the mix of AsAm blogs! Are there any organizations you would recommend for more information on APA events, etc. in the Portland area?

hah. That Chinese Restaurant name generator thing on the post linked above is pretty damn funny.

    Hey Azn,

Good to hear from you! Glad to be on your blogroll!

Thanks for that Portland blog post. Haha! I was laughing so hard because you’re totally right. When I first moved here, I saw that big Chinese arch, I saw the restaurants with the big chopsticky lettering, but I didn’t see any Chinese people. I was like…huh? I almost expected to see David Carradine doing Tai Chi on Burnside.

The story is this: downtown Portland Chinatown used to be Chinese, but with some gentrification and some reverse gentrification (you may have seen some of the unsavory parts), many of the Chinese moved across the river to SE 82nd. That’s the new Chinatown. There are some activist investors, however, who are trying to bring Chinatown back. See my post on John Jay.

If you head out to the West side, it’s a little bit more diverse with all the engineers and designers from Intel and Nike. But it’s the burbs.

Next time you’re in Portland, definitely give me a shoutout!

    ePanda–

Are you here? Dude, let’s talk! Shoot me an e-mail! (naruguard-44 at yahoo)

There are a number of good organizations. My org is Thymos, and you can find our events on our site. See our prior events here. You can see the blog on the side where we sometimes announce events. Other than that, I can put you on our e-mail list too–that’s probably the best way; we’re a bit low tech when it comes to the blogging.

Also, check out APANO. Joseph runs that. They’ve got some pretty cool activist stuff. Portland JACL is the largest AA org out here. They do cool stuff too.
