Call for Asian American Writers

300erniepyletypewriter

If you are a fiction writer of Asian American descent who writes about Asian Americans, we are forming a writers group.  We have room for one more person.  E-mail me (naruguard-44 at yah oo dot com) if you’re a writer who is interested in a writing group.  If one group fills up, I can always introduce writers to each other so that people can form other groups.

Some European Newspapers Thrive

One media company that is thriving

The NY Times, itself hurting in this bad economy, published an article today about how some newspapers in Europe are thriving: European Papers Find Creative Ways to Thrive.  The comparison is a bit assymetrical since, as the article says, “American newspapers are seen as journalism’s gold standard,” but it’s great that journalism is doing well in some locales.  The best thing is that they’re able to grow their numbers while keeping the news free:

D.I.Y. Magazines

It looks like HP is releasing a print-on-demand web service for magazines.  From the description, it sounds like the new service MagCloud is similar to lulu.com, where a publisher creates the publication over the web and customers order it directly.  The new service looks good–because HP is the king of printers, the service is capable of producing high quality glossy magazines.

The Blue and the Brown

Funny editorial by Maureen Dowd about eye color: Blue Eyed Greed.  The comments are just as funny as the article.  Most of the commenters are asking what the point is, but the fact that there is no point makes it all that much funnier.

My Older Person's 44s Post

I am posting the following to the 44s. It’s funny because there are two entirely different audiences on this site vs. the 44s. I love the 44s site, but the fact is that I’m getting older, and the things that concern me these days are not always the same as what concerned me in the past. bigWOWO’s audience, to a large degree, is much more suitable for my current age and mindset.

Here’s my post:

Slash teaches guitar to kids

I found the video above on CNN. Pretty cool stuff. It looks like Slash is using his post-GNR days to inspire kids with his talent. I was impressed with his love of music and what he had to say about it: “[Music] is just as important as math or English or history.” I agree with that. If you google “Confucius” and “music,” you will see that music played an extremely important part of traditional Asian culture. It was considered a necessary subject for educated people. It’s only in the modern age that Asian and Asian American people became preoccupied with math, science, and subjects that deal with hard reality. I think it’s time for a renaissance.

They never asked me

The NY Times had a short article today about a teacher from a financially stressed school who brokered a deal with a pizza place.  The high school teacher Jeb Harrison brokered a deal that allowed a local pizza restaurant to put ads on the bottom of every page for buying 10,000 sheets of paper for $315.  Kids studying their assignments now have to see pizza ads in order to pay for their education.

“I taught my kids a good lesson,” Mr. Harrison said. “I saved my school some money, and I helped out a local business.”

Asian Red Face May Indicate Risk of Cancer

According to the NY Times, if you get red face when you drink but are still able to consume large amounts of alcohol, it means that you’re at an increased risk of throat cancer.

Turning red is a trait shared by 1/3 of people of East Asian ancestry, caused by a lack of the enzyme called ALDH2.  If you have two copies of the gene responsible for the missing enzyme, you get red and feel sick after very little alcohol.  If you have only one copy of the gene, you’ll get red, but you’ll still be able to drink.  It’s these people–the red faced drinkers–who are at an increased risk of throat cancer.  So if you’re a drinker who turns red, you may want to cut down.

Deep Pockets and Asian American Culture

The NY Times had a great editorial about Bernard Madoff and the allure of money: If Looks Could Steal.  In the editorial, Daphne Merkin, sister of a Madoff investor, talks about how we as a society respect money and how money seems to validate everything that a rich person says.  She brings up an example of a dinner with George Soros, and she describes it thus:

Steven Chu adjusts to politics

Secretary of Energy Steven Chu

Secretary of Energy Steven Chu

The NY Times had an article about Energy Secretary Steven Chu’s  adjustment to Washington today.  He’s got a bumpy road ahead.  It’s hard for numbers guys to get used to the rough and tumble of debate.  It says:

Asked later what part of his job he liked the least, Dr. Chu said: “The fact that I’m constantly being told that I have to be careful what I say to the press and in public. I can’t speculate out loud anymore. Everything I say is taken with total seriousness.”
