Podcast: bigWOWO and the Asian American Movement Blog

Larry from the Asian American Movement Blog visited yesterday, and we did a podcast. Download it here, or listen to it here:
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
It’s 25:39 minutes long and 11.7 megs. During the first 8 minutes and 30 seconds, we discuss Larry’s new blog, how he got involved with the Asian American Movement Ezine, and where they are looking to take the blog. During the remaining 18 minutes, Larry and I talk about the Miley Cyrus incident, activism, the Asian American blogosphere, and getting things done.
Chinese literary dreams through the web

Reading novels online
In America, the web is doing awesome things for people with hidden talent. People can become professional broadcasters, musicians, and even professional bloggers. Few writers, however, have made their bones by starting on the web. In the U.S., for the most part, literary careers still usually come about through traditional channels–agents, traditional publishers, etc.
Learning from Japan's Bank Crisis

Heizo Takenaka, fixer of the Japanese "lost decade"
I’ll admit that I’m at a total loss for explanation on all this bailout talk. I have no strong opinion, other than the belief that it’s wrong for executives to be overpaying themselves at times like this. Why do I lack an opinion? I think it’s because I have trouble conceptualizing $800 billion, plus I have no idea what will ever restore future confidence in the American consumer.
For those who have a strong opinion, here is a piece from the NY Times about Japan’s bank crisis for the 90′s. People who have studied Japan say that even though the U.S. is spending like crazy, we should be spending and doing even more.
Agent Cho: The Mentalist

Tim Kang as Kimball Cho in the Mentalist
In general, I don’t like TV. I tend to watch a lot these days since I’m too tired to do anything else, but in general I’d rather be doing anything else. The only show I really like is Medium–which is the best written show ever.
I’ve avoided the Mentalist mostly because the main character was annoying as hell in the commercials (and is even more annoying in the actual show). After seeing way too many annoying commercials, I finally tuned in a couple days ago for the first time.
Young Designers

Thanks to Lingyai for bringing this article to my attention. It doesn’t say anything about Asian designers, but that’s basically what it is.
I’ve never been into fashion or design, but I have noticed a very strong showing in that industry by Asian Americans. Fashion, design, architecture–it seems like it’s an area where many people from our culture are distinguishing themselves. I know quite a few designers myself. Wish I had an eye for that visual kind of thing. (Y’all would definitely see a more attractive WOWO site…)
Another "Apology"

Racist Leader of Kids
Miley Cyrus recently just issued another half-apology. See it here:
I really wanted to stress how sorry I am if the photo of me with my friends offended anyone.
Again, she places the onus on the people who are offended rather than herself.
We’ve been talking about this a lot. Personally, I think it’s good that we continue to do so. It’s a symbolic act of racism and is unbecoming for someone in her position as a major celebrity for kids. Is she ever going to fully apologize? Possibly not. However, I think it behooves us to continue raising the issue since it’s a gesture that so many of us have had to endure, a gesture that many of us associate with violence as well.
Stand up: Upcoming Podcast

Bully defense lessons in Hillsboro, OR
(Picture from oregonlive.com)
I had always thought that I’d be the parent who would advocate strong physicality as a means to empower children. I figured I’d be much like Metrodad’s post, inculcating tough personalities in my kids, a no back down kind of mentality that emphasizes physical prowess as a means to solve schoolyard issues. It’s a particularly relevant issue to our culture, since schoolyard violence is almost a rite of passage among young Asian American boys (and sometimes girls). I figured I’d be teaching my kid to fight back. Fight the bully. Fight the system.
NY Times Section on Media and Advertising
The NY Times now has a section devoted specifically to issues on media and advertising. See it here. I’ve known about it for a while. I hit the page and checked it out for the first time today.
Some interesting stories:
1. More analysis on the financial state of the NY Times. Overall it looks positive, much like the Bill Keller analysis that I posted last week. But who knows?
2. Newsweek is revamping its identity and target audience. The current business model isn’t working financially, so they are making drastic changes.
Andrew Mark
We were at different ends of the religious spectrum, but I was always impressed by the love you gave your family and the warmth you showed towards mine. I was amazed by your compassion and by all you were able to accomplish at such a young age. You were an amazing person. Thank you for knowing me and allowing me to know you. Rest in peace, brother.

The Asian Kid
Terri left this message on the Miley Cyrus thread. Check it out. As with all of Terri’s messages, it was thoughtful and intelligent, and I agree with everything she said. As a survivor of racial schoolyard violence (along with the “turn the other cheek” attitude of hypocritical teachers), I have all the empathy in the world for young Asian kids. So after reading Terri’s comment, I wanted to add just a note of clarification, a prescription for the kid, and a note about what I think that people like us should do.
