Connections and helpful activities through the web

Chen Xiao
CNN had this inspiring story off its front page.
Chen Xiao, living in Beijing, had a terrible 2008. So she put her life online, asking strangers to hire her for $3 an hour. She does little tasks around Beijing, meeting people and sharing in their experiences. She’s found that she’s making a good living and meeting lots of interesting people.
What she stumbled upon was not only a new life but a new way to make a living. She charges about $3 an hour, and she’s been asked to do almost everything from delivering pet food to caring for stray cats to taking a hot lunch to a homeless man.
Fox News criticizes Jindal
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought Jindal bombed last night. Check out the footage above. When he first came on with that phony looking walk, I cringed. Then when he started talking, it reminded me of an infomercial. He began by pumping us up, telling us how we all have to get along. Then he told us the Repubs disagreed with Obama and that they wanted to cut our taxes and government spending.
His delivery was weak. Weak. As I said, I don’t think he even convinced himself. He seems like a nice enough guy, but what a shipwreck of a performance.
Obama's Speech to Congress
(Picture from the NY Times)
Obama nailed it tonight with his speech. As CBS New Senior Political Correspondent Jeff Greenfield said after the broadcast, it was like a Fireside Chat. Obama used the platform to address the American people, not just the people in the room. Obama pretty much said that this was his intent:
I have come here tonight not only to address the distinguished men and women in this great chamber, but to speak frankly and directly to the men and women who sent us here.
Rupert Apologizes

The Most Powerful Media Man in the World
(Picture from Ask Men.)
Rupert Murdoch, whose News Corp owns the New York Post, apologized today for the chimp cartoon. It’s a warm, sincere apology, and it’s the right thing to do. It’s good to hear that the apology came from the very top. The most powerful media man in the world has apologized for an offending cartoon in one of his many papers.
“It was not meant to be racist, but unfortunately, it was interpreted by many as such. We all hold the readers of the New York Post in high regard, and I promise you that we will seek to be more attuned to the sensitivities of our community.”
Locke for Commerce Secretary
Sources say that Obama is going to nominate former Washington governor Gary Locke as Commerce Secretary. See the news story here. As you political junkies know, Richardson left because of a federal investigation, and Republican Judd Gregg left over the stimulus bill and other “irresolvable” differences. Hopefully this nomination will stand.
Glen S. Fukushima Fellowship

(Picture from here.)
Curtis Chin from APAP asked that I publicize the following fellowship. The application deadline is FRIDAY, so if you’re interested, get your application out this week. According to the website, “Selected fellows will receive a cash stipend and free housing to work on an exciting campaign.” Of course each applicant should do his or her own research on the candidate Judy Chu to see if her policies are in line with the applicant’s, but it sounds like an excellent opportunity for the right person.

Frugality on Trial
I saw this article in the NY Times yesterday. The article talks about how following Japan’s Lost Decade, consumption continued to lag. People were so affected by the past economic problems that they never got back up. For example:
Today, years after the recovery, even well-off Japanese households use old bath water to do laundry, a popular way to save on utility bills. Sales of whiskey, the favorite drink among moneyed Tokyoites in the booming ’80s, have fallen to a fifth of their peak. And the nation is losing interest in cars; sales have fallen by half since 1990.
Bamboo
Check out this awesome CNN video on bamboo. Bamboo is awesome. It’s a form of grass, it grows really quickly, and according to the video, it absorbs quite a bit of carbon dioxide. It’s strong, durable, and it looks cool. Check out the video to see what people can build with bamboo. And it’s not just Asian people who are into it!
My Letter to Disney
See my letter below. If you want to contact the same people, download my Disney contact data file here and do a mail merge from your main document. (Every activist should know how to do a mail merge. If you don’t, check out the tutorial here.) All you have to pay is the money for the stamp. The OCA and Organization of Chinese Americans are not included in my contact list–for them, I handwrote the addresses and cover letters. I sent all of my letters on February 17th, 2008. So far, I’ve only heard back from one recipient–OCA. I’m glad that OCA stands behind us Asian Americans. Very few others seem to be listening.
The NY Post Needs to Apologize

The NY Post posted the political cartoon above, and it’s causing an outroar. Al Sharpton is angry, although he’s giving them a chance to explain:
“The Post should at least clarify what point they were trying to make in this cartoon, and reprimand their cartoonist for making inferences that are offensive and divisive at a time the nation struggles to come together to stabilize the economy if, in fact, this was yet another racially charged cartoon,” he said.
The cartoonist Delonas is defiant and unapologetic, calling the controversy “”absolutely friggin’ ridiculous.”
