Writing Contest: Win a copy of Gene Luen Yang's American Born Chinese!

The Deluder-in-Chief

The NY Times’s Frank Rich has a great retrospective look at highlights of the Bush 43 Administration.  I personally am never going to forget this president.  George W. Bush managed to tank our economy, get us involved in a murderous and illegal war, trample on our rights as citizens, increase global warming, and destroy America’s standing in the world.  He’s our Worst President Ever.  Nicholas Kristof said that he’d give Buchanan worse marks for splitting the country in two, but I’d disagree.  Buchanan was a bad president only because he was too soft and failed to take bold action.  Our current president took bold action in the wrong direction.

We’ve got two more weeks of Bush left.  As Bush himself might say while at church, “Hallelujah!”  Not that it matters anymore–as the article mentions, he’s become largely irrelevant.  But it’ll still be good to see him leave the presidency once and for all.  So let’s celebrate in style with a contest, the very first bigWOWO writing contest: Two More Weeks of Bush(league).

The Assignment: I want to know why this year will be better than last. It’s a personal question: What makes you happy about the upcoming year that’s different from the last?  What are YOU doing to make it different.  Write your answer in 500 words or less, and send it to me at naruguard-44 at yahoo dot com. I’ll send the submissions to a diverse two or three person committee of Thymos people (I will NOT be judging) in Portland who will pick the top three.  I’ll delete the names before submitting, just so it’s all anonymous and based on merit.  The Grand Prize winner will receive a free copy of Gene Luen Yang’s American Born Chinese, plus he or she will have his or her submission published on bigWOWO!  First and second runner up are guaranteed have their submissions published on bigWOWO.  If we get really good ones, we may publish even more.  Free shipping if you’re in the United States or Canada.

Submission criteria: One entry per person, 500 words or less, text in the BODY of the e-mail (no Word docs), subject line to read: “bigWOWO Contest.”  Our judges will evaluate your piece mostly on content, but form is important too.  You have to be at least 18 years old.

Deadline: January 20th, the last day of George W. Bush’s regime, I mean, presidency.

Write your heart out, have fun doing it, and I look forward to hearing from you all.

Forget about winning _American Born Chinese_. Just being published on bigWOWO is an honor unto itself!

It’s almost like winning a National Book Award, Booker Prize, and MacArthur “genius” Grant all rolled into one!

    So submit your essays now.

Haha! Definitely submit. bigWOWO is the Atlantic Monthly of the AA blogosphere! So far, we’ve got a total of ZERO submissions, so anyone who submits stands a pretty good chance of winning!

  3. I guess I won’t have to worry about being marginalized for this one! I’m on it!
