Obama and King

Obama and King

(Picture from here.)

Today is the inauguration of our very first African American President of the United States.  Barack Obama, after a long, hard campaign, will be sworn in as our 44th President, 46 years after Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

According to a CNN poll, more than 2/3 of African Americans believe that King’s dream of race relations has been realized.  According to this UPI article:

Noodle World and Bob's Big Boy

I saw this inspirational story on AngryAsianMan: Noodle World’s Homage to It’s Big Boy Roots

I’m a sucker for stories about lineage and the preservation of history.  I think it’s awesome that Noodle World decided to bring back a symbol of what the restaurant used to be.  It’s especially potent because it unites people–residents of all races remember Bob’s Big Boy and what it meant to them.

John DeFrancis, Chinese Language Scholar, Is Dead at 97

One thing nice about reading the obits is that you learn about cool people who did cool things.  I’m pretty sure that I’ve heard of John DeFrancis, probably when I was studying Chinese in school.  According to his obituary, he was “one of the most influential scholars and teachers of the Chinese language in the last century.”

These days, it’s relatively easy to pack the ol’ passport and head out to the Far East, but back in the day, one had to have a sense of adventure to travel from West to East or vice versa.  The early twentieth century was a busy time for China with the Boxer Rebellion and the downfall of the last emperor, and anyone traveling during that time had to be pretty brave.

Plane lands in the Hudson

(Pictures from Reuters and CNN.)

This is an amazing story: ‘Miraculous’ Landing in Hudson.   Go online and look around.  The pictures (more below) are pretty unreal too.

From CNN:

A source familiar with the situation, however, told CNN the pilot reported a double bird strike, but it was unclear whether that meant birds in both engines or two birds in one engine.

The pilot initially said he needed to go back, and air traffic controllers started to give him clearance to do so, but the pilot said he wanted to head to Teterboro, New Jersey, because it was closer. That was the last transmission from the pilot, the source said.

Note on password

Uggh. Sorry. I’m terrible at web stuff.

If I sent you the password, please eliminate the apostrophe and space. In other words, “dawson’s creek” become “dawsonscreek.” I had some trouble with my WordPress upgrade after someone said they couldn’t leave comments. I think it’s fixed now, but the new WordPress doesn’t seem to allow passwords with spaces and stuff.

Site Announcements/Reminders

Just a few site reminders and announcements, all of which is free free free:

1. There’s less than a week left in our “Two More Weeks of Bush(league)” contest.  This is good news for our government and planet but bad news for those who take a long time to write.  Get your submissions in. Our two judges are standing by.  Remember, free book!

2. We’re going to bring back the podcasts soon, beginning this Thursday (tomorrow) with the Alpha-Asian.  If anyone is interested in calling in, please let me know. Or let the Alpha know.  Free fitness advice!  (BTW, I’m still working on the quality.  That hasn’t changed so far, but we’re working on it.)

Joe the Correspondent

Plumber-turned-"reporter"

Plumber-turned-reporter

I was having a conversation with a friend a while back about the troubles facing the publishing industry, and I said that the new internet economy would require a lot more promotion on the part of authors/writers.  I said that it’s going to be hard for authors to get the word out while maintaining their sense of dignity.  In other words, the economy may force authors to become attention junkies who push the envelope on getting the word out.  Such hard sales, I postulated, might be necessary to get book contracts, etc. since margins are so slim these days.  As an example, I mentioned the fact that Joe the Plumber landed a contract to write an autobiography.  While real authors struggle with agents and publishing houses, someone in publishing got the bright idea to approach Joe the (unlicensed) Plumber and offer him a lucrative book deal.

Prince Harry calls fellow soldier a "Paki"

Prince Harry

For anyone who has dealt at length with people from Britain, this was to be expected.  They are a country with lots of white supremacist racists.  Not all of them, of course, but a lot of them.  It makes lots of sense: colonize the entire world AND enter the 21st century without having a civil rights movement or a abolition movement, and crap like this takes place.  I’m not saying this as a personal attack; it’s just a fact.
