Infomercials

This article is about how the proliferation of infomercials during prime time are an indication of the failing economy, but here’s something that you probably didn’t know:

In exchange for the lower prices, infomercial producers are given no guarantees about when their ads will run. The networks give priority of time to the full-price ads, which usually take up the slots during prime time and other popular times. When the networks cannot find advertisers to pay the premium time slots, they will use direct-response ads instead.

Happy Lunar New Year!

ox_600_1

Happy New Year, everyone!

Saw this article in the NY Times this morning: Year of the Ox is looking Inauspicious

“The mood is confused and desperate,” said Kerby Kuek, a feng shui master and Chinese astrologer. “Two years ago, people would ask me if they should change from a medium house to a big house, or from a Nissan to a BMW.

“Now people ask me directly, ‘When am I going to get laid off?”’

Portland, the Whitest Big City in the West

whitestcities

Thanks, Larry, for this article from the Oregonian.  My goodness, we’re whiter than Nashville!  We should start our own country music scene here.

This part of the article describes the cultural issues accurately:

Portland-area employers competing for top talent have a hard time retaining African American hires, who often can’t bear the social and cultural isolation of a metro area that is less than 3 percent black.

“A lot of my friends and other minorities come here to Portland thinking of it as a stopover,” says Angel Anderson, an African American software engineer from suburban Chicago who was recruited by Intel. “They leave the state in a year or two.”

Autopsy of an Independent Bookstore

codys

Really sad story in BusinessWeek about Cody’s Books, an independent bookseller.  I’ve blogged about the decline of the media many times, but this is the first story I’ve seen on the carnage taking place in the world of independent booksellers.  It’s amazing how many famous authors Cody’s has hosted, and it’s sad that these forums will no longer be present.

I don’t know what the solution is, and I live in the suburbs…

Tech Business News

Intel and Microsoft are cutting jobs after their financials came out worse than expected.  AMD, according to the Intel article, is planning to cut 9% of its workforce.  Apple, however, beat analysts expectations and posted a net income gain of almost 2% compared with last year.  Apple’s rise, however, may be short-lived, since Steve Jobs is having health issues.

This hits very close to home since Intel has several major plants in the Portland area, and Microsoft is only three hours away in Redmond, WA.  Portland’s unemployment rate is already over 9%, and this closure is only going to make things worse.

Site News

Okay, so we got ZERO submissions for our Two More Weeks of Bush (League) contest.  Oh well.  I guess you all were so ready for Dubya to fly out that there was no need to even acknowledge him.  I know the feeling because I was feeling it too.  I still have the book, so we’ll come up with another contest sometime in the future.

You’ll notice now that there’s a “ShareThis” button on every post.  It’s a new plugin for bigWOWO; you can use it to share with your e-mail and social networking buddies.  You can also use it for Digg and other types of news sites.  Enjoy!  Let’s use the web to find other bigWOWOs (or potential bigWOWOs).

The First Black First Family

obamafamily

CNN has a great piece on the Obamas role in breaking stereotypes of what a black family is supposed to be.  Check it out here

This is hilarious:

Jamaal Young was watching Barack Obama and his family greet an ecstatic crowd in Chicago, Illinois, on Election Night when he realized that something seemed wrong.

Obama didn’t shout at his wife, Michelle, to shut up. The first lady didn’t roll her eyes and tell Obama to act like a man. No laugh track kicked in, no one danced, and no police sirens wailed in the background.

Dave Porter

Dave Porter

I had the opportunity this past weekend to interview Mr. David Porter, a local Portland activist for bilingual education.  Dave has been working with the Oregon State Legislature to bring a greater focus on foreign languages to our schools, and his work heavily emphasizes Mandarin Chinese immersion programs.  Download our podcast here, or hear it below:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The podcast is around 30 minutes, 13.7 megs.

If No One is Present to Hear a Tree Fall…

Fedor

Fedor

There was a NY Times article today about Fedor Emilianenko, where we learn among other things that we were ALL mispronouncing his name.

Fedor Emelianenko (pronounced FYO-dor yemel-YAN-enko) was born in 1976, the son of a teacher and a welder, and began as a boy to practice judo and sambo, a martial art developed in the Soviet Union.

He’s got the same first name as Dostoyevsky.  So why doesn’t he spell it that way?  (typical ignorant American question…)

The 44th President

Barack Obama

Barack Obama

The day is finally here!  Barack Obama just became the 44th President of the United States of America.  Thank goodness for the internet; I was able to watch on MSNBC.

For fellow news junkies, here are two good links I found on the web to provide some perspective on this historical day:

NY Times interactive page on inaugural words

Washington Post article on why Obama may become one of the most powerful presidents of all time
