Book Clubs

Even though I love writing, love reading, and love having books, I’m not a member of a book club.  Discussion clubs, yes; but book clubs, no.  However, I have friends who are in book clubs and have told me of the intense politicking that such memberships require.  We actually tried to start a book club, and it failed for…the very same reason.   (I hope I wasn’t an “ayatollah,” but things always look different when you’re evaluating yourself.).  Anyway, this article about book clubs from the NY Times made me laugh.

Pacquiao Beats De La Hoya by TKO

Amazing.  This is hot off of the press…check here (picture above from this site).  De La Hoya failed to answer the bell after Round 8.  Apparently both this blogger and this blogger gave every single round to Pacquiao.  I unfortunately didn’t get to see the fight, but props to Manny Pacquiao.  He was the much smaller underdog, but he did well.

Obama to nominate Eric Shinseki as VA Head

General Eric Shinseki

General Eric Shinseki

It looks like tomorrow we’re going to get our first Asian American department head nomination from the Obama administration. According to AFP, Obama will nominate former Army Chief of Staff Eric Shinseki to head the Department of Veteran Affairs.  If you news junkies remember, Shinseki asked for “several hundred thousand” troops for Iraq when he was Army Chief of Staff.  The Bush Administration took offense at this estimate, since it meant that Iraq wasn’t going to be easy, and Rumsfeld and Company rewarded Shinseki’s correct assessment by announcing his successor, effectively undermining his authority and forcing his early retirement.  Of course, it later turned out that Shinseki was correct and the Bushies were wrong.  Had the Bush Administration followed Gen. Shinseki’s lead, we could’ve saved thousands of lives.  (We could’ve saved even more by not going there in the first place, but that, of course, is an entirely different issue…)

Evolutionary Amnesia

Aiya…very tired.  I pulled an all-nighter yesterday with a crying baby.

I don’t remember this happening with baby #1, but I think that’s part of our evolutionary makeup–our minds trick us into “remembering” how easy it was so that we have more, more, more without fear.  Even now, I can’t believe how I’ve forgotten how to raise a newborn.  It’s the complete opposite of riding a bike–you never forget how to ride a bike, and you never remember how to raise an infant child.

Teaching Relationship Skills

This article was referred by skrips of the 44s: Island of Support in the Teen Scene.

It’s a story about a group in Seattle called the Asian Counseling and Referral Service (ACRS) that teaches healthy dating and relationship skills to young women at the high school level.  Through the service, women learn how to stop abuse, how to respect themselves, and how to empower themselves.  Plus, they have lots of community support since they work with other young women.

Chinese Americans and Bill Richardson

Wen Ho Lee team

Wen Ho Lee team

Got this earlier from a Thymos member:Chinese-American activists oppose any Bill Richardson cabinet nomination.

This is my opinion:

Richardson should definitely apologize.  He himself may not be racist, but he oversaw a racist witch-hunt.  Lee never spied.  He used an unsecure computer to access those nuclear files, which is against the rules, but there were many white guys who were doing the exact same thing, and they didn’t get charged.  Richardson needs to come clean.
I think this group is right to oppose his nomination.  I don’t think the Wen Ho Lee case indicates that Richardson would make a bad Commerce Secretary, but in this age of racial awareness, I think it’s right for him to apologize.
On a side note, I am also a realist.  Had Richardson apologized back in the day, he may not have become governor of New Mexico.  Had he not become governor, he wouldn’t have been set to run against Obama.  Had he not been in a position to endorse Obama after dropping out, Obama may have never won.  So like most issues in politics, this one is complex.  I can’t predict what an apology would do to either Richardson or the Obama administration.

Ancient Chinese Cannabis

Saw this story on the 44s from Minbo: 2,700-year-old marijuana found in Chinese tomb.  It says:

OTTAWA – Researchers say they have located the world’s oldest stash of marijuana, in a tomb in a remote part of China.

Here I thought my ancestors were partying it up, but unfortunately, no.

The 789 grams of dried cannabis was buried alongside a light-haired, blue-eyed Caucasian man, likely a shaman of the Gushi culture, near Turpan in northwestern China.

The big WOWO concept in action

big WOWO himself

My son has big WOWO, and he also has a little plastic cat whom he calls Mao-Mao.  bigWOWO is about a foot in height, and Mao-Mao is about three inches tall.  Yesterday, my son was playing with the two toys.  He held the two toys one in each hand, and he made them face one another.  He then shook Mao-Mao up and down, prostrated it before big WOWO, and he said in a high pitched voice, “No!  No eat me!  No eat me!”  It was one of the cutest things ever.

The Future of Books

I’ve got at least two readers on this site who have published book-length pieces, along with at least one other who has published in literary magazines, and now I’ve learned that The Minority Militant will be publishing a novel soon (hear our podcast, excellent in content but leaving much to be desired in sound quality…). I’m glad you’re all here.  We all need to support each other.

For those who don’t know, I someday hope to publish myself.  You guys are all ahead of me though, so don’t stay up waiting for my book length work.
