Book Clubs

Even though I love writing, love reading, and love having books, I’m not a member of a book club.  Discussion clubs, yes; but book clubs, no.  However, I have friends who are in book clubs and have told me of the intense politicking that such memberships require.  We actually tried to start a book club, and it failed for…the very same reason.   (I hope I wasn’t an “ayatollah,” but things always look different when you’re evaluating yourself.).  Anyway, this article about book clubs from the NY Times made me laugh.

We actually tried an online bookclub – initially a dozen or so signed up and then only 4 remained… then we folded it quietly. I think it’s folded. :-) I know I can be pedantic and that’s probably why I never joined a bookclub in real life. I have to say, though, that article is funny – and I agree with Ms. Bowie, if MY bookclub were to discuss Da Vinci Code as a piece of literature, I’d be less polite about quitting the group.

Wow, I would think that an online club would be really hard. I heard that at a lot of clubs, maybe only 2/3 of the members actually finish the book. I can only imagine how hard an online club might be without the face-to-face contact and the fear of “getting called on.”
