Most of the conversation was getting to know the other people and what they’ve done in Asian American activism. We also talked about publications and getting the word out. We also talked about each person’s personal history and background with respect to Asian Americanism. Since we’re all bloggers, we decided to organize as a kind of federation–people come up with projects to work on in real life, and the rest of us provide support.

I think you would’ve liked it. I’ll also e-mail you next time we have it. When we talk, I can tell you about my own personal activist project (you haven’t heard it yet).

When exactly is this teleconference? If it’s about PUA stuff again, I really don’t wanna sit around and hear why it works or doesn’t work. What I’d really like to talk about is the status of the Asian American online community and how it pales in comparison to other communities. I know you guys have spoken quite a bit about it, but something to that effect would be beneficial.

MM: Don’t worry. We’re not PUA obsessed. Your idea about the Asian American online community is actually something that we touched upon a little and definitely an issue that we could talk about in the future. In general, these web conferences are pretty open in terms of topic. If you have anything that you really want to address, you should join future teleconferences.

It would be good to get other perspectives from the Asian American community for these conferences. They can bring in fresh ideas and energy.

Abrasiveness isn’t necessarily a bad thing. And if you’re abrasive in person, people will probably hear you more since they can’t just click a link to get away.

Hey MM,

Sorry, we just had the teleconference yesterday. If you’re interested in participating in the next one, I can e-mail you the next time around.

We mostly spoke yesterday about real life activism, stuff that we do off of the web. I talked a bit about Thymos, and the other people spoke about the projects or potential projects that they have going on. We talked a little bit about the web, but most of the focus was on real life stuff. It was really good.

W is a female. She knows lots of PUAs in real life, so she’s also a bit of an authority on that. William wasn’t there.

Anyway, I’ll try to remember to shoot you an e-mail the next time around.

I think I can honestly say that I am equally abrasive in person as I am on the internet. I just look a certain way and people are fooled into believing that I’m not as harsh as I actually am. And I can hardly take responsibility of the bad judgment of others.

I was also hoping to write a piece on internet communication and the problems that come up when communicating typographically. This piece is important to me, but I have a feeling it won’t be out until next year.

I was reading some articles related to this issue. There are social neuroscientists studying the psychology of online communications and what goes on in the brain when, for instance, people are flaming each other.

Flaming has even been given a technical name: the Online Disinhibition Effect.

And there’s a phenomenon called Web Rage (or Net Rage). It’s like road rage, only on the internet. Basically, there’s increasing numbers of people using the internet to “vent their psychotic urges and frustrations at the world.”

Pretty interesting stuff.
