How do we fix this leak?

It looks like “Joe the Plumber” just got soaked by the news media.  He’s not a licensed plumber, and he owes back taxes–two liens over $1,000.  Even if Obama raised his taxes, he probably wouldn’t pay.

This is what I was talking about with Jason here; we’ve got a poor guy who has had his ego challenged and now he says that raising taxes on the wealthy is socialism.  Keep in mind that at his present income, the Obama plan would make his life as a single father who struggles to pay his current taxes easier than the McCain plan.  He hasn’t even experienced the wealthy life, and even then, there was a video of him yesterday with Diane Sawyer saying that it would be wrong even to raise the taxes on someone making $1 million or $5 million.

PUA Schools and the Quest for Liberation

William and I have recently been debating on whether the Asian Playboy created his own system of pickup, and whether it’s right that Mystery, whom everyone agrees was Playboy’s original teacher, doesn’t get credit on the main section of APB’s website. I’m neither a Mystery nor an APB disciple, so on some level, it doesn’t make a difference to me. However, I think it’s an interesting question, both philosophically and practically. For William, it makes a difference since it’s how he defines himself and his activism. Is he an ABC guy, a Mystery Method guy, or will he do his own thing?  To further explore this question in depth, let’s look at martial arts.

End the Politics of Hate

Racist McCain Supporter

Here’s an online petition that you can circulate and send to your friends.  You can see the video here.  Above, you can see what some of these McCain supporters are doing–yes, that’s a monkey.  To date, McCain hasn’t said or done anything of substance to prevent this kind of race baiting.  Sarah Palin is inciting this hatred among racists and xenophobes; I guess she really does feel at home in the “heartland.”

Question for Readers: Bilingualism and Money

Councilman John Liu

I’d love to get to know the readers of this blog, so I thought I’d pose a question to all of you.  I hope you’ll all drop a comment if you have an opinion.  Remember, registration on big WOWO is not necessary.  I welcome everyone to share his or her voice.

In our podcast last week with William, James, Jason, Larry, and myself, we were talking about “Crabs in a Bucket,” and William mentioned that Councilman John Liu has taken flack from some Asian American groups for supposedly being a “media whore.”  Minority Militant blogged about it here.  (And I probably wouldn’t be writing this post if he hadn’t used his blog to bring attention to this part of our podcast…so, thank you.)

Father of American dictionary

Some of you word geeks might find this interesting: Yale salutes father of American dictionary.

I had no idea that back in the Revolutionary days only 60% of the country spoke English.  According to the article, back in the day, everyone else spoke German, Swedish, and Dutch.  Noah Webster was the one who unified the country through language.  It says:

A teacher after the Revolutionary War, Webster believed that Americans should have their own textbooks rather than rely on English books. He created a speller that taught students to read, spell and pronounce words and traveled around the country to promote the book.

Better Asian Man Emergency Podcast 10/08/08

So William posted podcast #2 from two night ago. You can see it here, or you can play it here:

This podcast topic immediately followed our first bigWOWO podcast, and the purpose was to question William over his linking to APB and Johnny. It’s the exact same crew: William, THX, Jason, James, and me.  The original question was framed as follows: If your site is an activist site, and if APB and Johnny promote sexist objectification of women, why do you link to them?

"Say it to me!"

From CNN.com:

Biden also said he’s had enough of the McCain camp’s personal attacks on Obama, slamming the Arizona senator for violating the “ethics” of the old neighborhood for not having the courage to go after Obama’s character in their debates the way he has in speeches and in television ads.

“In my neighborhood you want to say something about me, look me in the eye and tell me,” said Biden. “Say it to me straight up. Say it to me head on. That’s the code, that’s the ethics! Say it to me! Ladies and gentlemen, I’m tired of losing, I’m tired of taking this stuff, I’ve had enough.”

Sports, Lit, and Yi Jianlian

I saw this article a few days ago about Yi Jianlian and the Nets.  The story is Yi, how he came to the Nets, how he is working with the Nets, and how the Nets are trying to market him to the 650,000 Chinese Americans in the New York area.  I’d be willing to bet that the Asian-appeal will probably attract a good number of others as well, especially Korean Americans, since there is a large population of Korean people around the same area.

I think people are realistic about the strategy:

big WOWO Podcast: Crabs in a Bucket

Hear our first podcast here.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

This was my first podcast over the phone.  The volume goes up and down, and there’s no music, but overall I was satisfied with the quality.  Participating in this podcast were William from BetterAsianMan, James from Alpha-Asian, Flipsoul and THX from the Fighting 44s, and me from big WOWO AND the Fighting 44s.  The topic was Crabs in a Bucket, which I previously announced here.  We discussed when and if it was okay to criticize other Asian people.  It was an awesome podcast, and I was happy to have the opportunity to talk with so many smart people.  I think we made lots of progress.  You guys all taught me something.
