This is bad news: Talks Implode During Day of Chaos
In the Roosevelt Room after the session, the Treasury secretary, Henry M. Paulson Jr., literally bent down on one knee as he pleaded with Nancy Pelosi, the House Speaker, not to “blow it up” by withdrawing her party’s support for the package over what Ms. Pelosi derided as a Republican betrayal.
“I didn’t know you were Catholic,” Ms. Pelosi said, a wry reference to Mr. Paulson’s kneeling, according to someone who observed the exchange. She went on: “It’s not me blowing this up, it’s the Republicans.”
Mr. Paulson sighed. “I know. I know.”
It’s a shame that people are playing politics with what is an obvious crisis. Today, the government also seized Washington Mutual. This is a financial crisis if we’ve ever seen one.
Personally, I’m disappointed in Bush, McCain, and Obama. I think they could all be doing a lot more. Bush could be taking some responsibility for the crisis, and he could outline where he went wrong and what he will do to fix it. However, he never takes responsibility, which is why we’re still in Iraq and still have a sinking economy. McCain could say a word or two about how his stance on deregulation is the wrong one to take. That isn’t going to happen either. Obama supports greater regulation, which is the right stance, but he could be more forthcoming about what measures he would take. We need leadership, and our leaders need to step up.
