"I'll try to find some and I'll bring 'em to ya."

I saw this absolutely hilarious video on Reappropriate.com:

I don’t know if they pulled actual quotes, but it’s eerily similar to the real life interview that took place between Couric and Palin. See it here:

You can see the full story here.

There is youtube version here (see the last couple of minutes):

44s Teleconference Notes

I am reposting the following from the Fighting 44s with permission of the author THX1138. This was our first teleconference that was open to the general public; I publicized it on the 44s front page, and I told everyone that anyone could call in to talk with us. I didn’t give out the number, but I urged people to contact me and assured them that they could talk with me if they did so. Only two of the general membership responded for this particular teleconference, but I was greatly encouraged by the fact that they did. I sincerely believe that people can work things out when they talk. Talking is far better than writing when it comes to relationships and getting things done.

Stocks skidded this afternoon, with the Dow’s nearly 778-point drop being the worst single-day point loss ever, after the House rejected the government’s $700 billion bank bailout plan.

And…there really isn’t much to say. Or maybe there’s something to say, but I just don’t feel like saying it.

Thoughts? Ideas?

Chinese Doctors in the News

Pretty amazing that you can watch ER and never see a Chinese doctor, but if you look at the news, they’re changing the world.  Just saw these on CNN.

First, an eight year old blind American girl travels to China for a stem cell infusion that enables her to see for the first time:
Second, a Chinese doctor in Australia performs a liver transplant by using a ping pong ball:

Making stuff

There’s an article by Thomas Friedman in the NY Times today, where he talks about the need for America as a country to start “making stuff.”  In other words, we need more manufacturing, rather than a reliance on financial instruments, many of which are faulty.  This is the exact same point that Kevin Phillips makes in American Theocracy a few years ago, but Phillips takes his analysis a bit further by indicting law and accounting, as well as finance, as industries that don’t produce anything of real concrete value.  Services are much harder to sell in the international market as other countries generally have their own laws and accounting rules.

The Art of the Neg

For what I think is the very first time in history, the New York Times posted a video of two Asian Americans on their main wedding page. You can see the video here, and you can see the accompanying story here.

It’s a really sweet story.  What I thought was especially cute was the fact that because they’re both architects, they seem to notice a lot about structure and design.  You can hear it in their words.  For example, she talks about how he leads her into a chapel, and then she talks about the dome and structure.  It’s cute when people have such passion in what they do that it carries into everything they do and observe.  Great story, and props to the NY Times.

The Debate is On

This is more of a public service announcement than a blog post.

The debate is on. It’s tonight at 6pm Pacific.

Edit: Just some observances:

6:18 PM: McCain is totally Bush-lite. I can’t believe how he danced around the regulation question. He did the exact same thing as Bush by basically just saying that he believes in the American worker, which has nothing to do with the current crisis we’re in.

6:30 PM: I’m not liking this at all. Obama is talking in abstractions. He needs to talk more about what he’s going to do in detail. McCain is still focusing on cutting spending. Why does McCain continue to dodge the regulation question?

Oh my…

This is bad news: Talks Implode During Day of Chaos

In the Roosevelt Room after the session, the Treasury secretary, Henry M. Paulson Jr., literally bent down on one knee as he pleaded with Nancy Pelosi, the House Speaker, not to “blow it up” by withdrawing her party’s support for the package over what Ms. Pelosi derided as a Republican betrayal.

“I didn’t know you were Catholic,” Ms. Pelosi said, a wry reference to Mr. Paulson’s kneeling, according to someone who observed the exchange. She went on: “It’s not me blowing this up, it’s the Republicans.”

Podcast: Anti-Racist Education

nskripchun

nskripchun

Download here.

This was our very first Fighting 44s podcast when we were in Portland last month, and the topic was “Anti-Racist Education.” Somehow we forgot to post it! It’s approximately 30 minutes in length, 13.6 megs, recorded on 8/22/08, and it features nskripchun and Xian, two seasoned professionals in the education system, discussing education and culture as it relates to Asian Americans. Mrs. skrips, who is also a teacher, has a short part too (to set skrips straight!). It’s a good discussion by three expert teachers with experience in the education field. They talk about tests, books, and racial and ethnic stereotypes as they relate to American students. I thought it was interesting because it gave me the opportunity to hear from three people who are on the ground dealing with the system and trying to impart knowledge to young America.

Chechen Wrestlers

Saw this article in the NY Times today about the importance of wrestling in Chechen (Chechnya) culture.  Through numerous wars taking place in the region along with the various changes of politics and policies, wrestling retains its importance among the people.

In Chechnya, the tiny and mostly sealed-off land where male fitness and martial courage are celebrated and codes of honor are passed down through generations, sports that pit one man against another in a contest of strength, skill and stamina have an intensive following. Young Chechen men learn judo, and to box and to wrestle. In wrestling circles in particular, Chechens are regarded as among the best in the world.
